Water play is its best-known public spectacle, but the holiday also centers on family reunions, temple visits, merit-making, respect for elders and blessings. Local celebrations vary by place and year, and some continue beyond the three main days.
When is Songkran?
The main observance is 13–15 April each year. Thailand’s cultural explainer names 13 April Maha Songkran Day, 14 April Nao Day and 15 April Tha Loeng Sok, also called Phya Wan Day. Songkran marks the solar transition from Pisces to Aries; the word, derived from Sanskrit, refers to movement or transition. Thailand’s government cultural explainer describes the three-day observance and its traditional associations.
Those dates are the national holiday’s core, not a guarantee that every local event begins and ends then. Celebrations can start earlier or run later, so check the relevant local and official tourism listings for the year you plan to visit.
What does Songkran celebrate?
Songkran is a New Year observance as well as a major family and community holiday. The days are associated with preparing for merit-making, visiting temples, making merit, dedicating merit to the deceased, building sand pagodas, and receiving blessings from elders. These practices give the festival a religious and family dimension that can be missed if it is understood only as street water play.

Water as a fresh-start ritual
Water carries symbolic meaning: Thai government material describes splashing as washing away misfortune and welcoming a fresh start. In customary rites, water is also poured in acts connected with respect and blessing, including water-pouring ceremonies for elders and the bathing of Buddha images. Public water play is the most visible expression, but it sits alongside these more reflective observances. The government’s cultural account and its 2026 Songkran explainer describe these meanings and customs.
Where can you celebrate Songkran in Thailand?
There is no single best destination for every visitor. Choose based on whether you want community and temple traditions or a large public event, how the dates fit your trip, and what transport and visitor arrangements are available. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) published the following examples for 2026; these are historical schedules, not a guide to a future year.

Bangkok’s 2026 Maha Songkran event
As a specific 2026 example, TAT reported that the Maha Songkran World Water Festival ran at Benchakitti Park from 11–15 April, with free admission. Its program included a “Songkran 5 Regions” cultural zone, performances, sand-pagoda building, Buddha image bathing, food and product stalls, and a water-play zone. TAT’s event announcement has the reported program details.

How should visitors plan for Songkran?
- Confirm dates for your destination. Local celebrations can fall before or after 13–15 April; use current official listings for the year of travel.
- Plan intercity travel ahead. TAT advised advance planning for its 2026 nationwide celebrations, which were spread across regions. Check current transport schedules and local access information before setting out.
- Choose the kind of observance you want. A temple or community-centered visit offers a different experience from a large public entertainment event; event listings can help you compare the program and arrangements.
- Protect your phone around water-play areas. A waterproof phone pouch is a practical accessory to consider if you will carry a phone near splashing; it is a general precaution, not an endorsement of a particular product.
What do the 2026 tourism figures mean?
Before the 2026 festival, the Tourism Authority of Thailand projected more than 30.35 billion baht in Songkran tourism revenue and about 500,000 international visitors contributing around 8.1 billion baht. The Royal Thai Government reported these as forecasts, not confirmed final results. They describe expectations for 2026 and should not be treated as actual outcomes or as a forecast for another year. The government’s report attributes the projections to TAT.
