Sung Il-Hwan’s return matters to the story, but the reunion with his son, Sung Jinwoo, can feel emotionally underprepared. The criticism is not that the father’s return lacks plot significance; it is that the story gives readers too little time to know Il-Hwan before his tragic end. Earlier character development could give an anime adaptation more room to make the reunion resonate.
Why does Jinwoo’s father return?
Il-Hwan is the father of both Jinwoo and Jinah. Netmarble’s official Solo Leveling:ARISE character profile says he was a successful strike squad leader who disappeared after entering a closing gate to save a comrade. He was declared missing, then later reappeared in a dungeon in America. Netmarble’s Sung Il-Hwan profile supplies this concise account of the return premise.
That history makes his reappearance consequential: it connects a family loss to the larger danger of gates and dungeons. But plot importance and emotional preparation are not the same thing. A return can alter the story’s direction while still feeling too brief to carry the weight of a long-separated father and son.
Why can the reunion fall short?
In a February 15, 2024, article, Hilary Leung of CBR argued that the reunion’s emotional payoff is limited because Il-Hwan has not received enough character groundwork before his tragic death. The point is about how the story develops him, not whether his return matters to the plot. The scene can also help readers understand Jinwoo by suggesting that some of his qualities connect to his father.

That combination creates a missed opportunity: the reunion gives Il-Hwan significance, but readers have limited time to build a sense of who he is as a person and as Jinwoo’s father. The emotional distance is especially noticeable when a story asks a short encounter to carry the feeling of years apart.
How could an anime adaptation strengthen the moment?
Leung’s article proposes earlier development of Il-Hwan as one way an anime adaptation could make the reunion more effective. That is a critical suggestion, not a confirmed production plan. Establishing Il-Hwan before his return could give viewers a clearer sense of his character and the father-son relationship, so that the reunion draws on more than the circumstances of his disappearance.
- Character groundwork: Give Il-Hwan a more distinct presence before the reunion.
- Relationship context: Make the emotional meaning of his absence and return legible through the father-son bond.
- Scene pacing: Allow the reunion enough room to register rather than relying solely on its plot reveal.
- Connection to Jinwoo: Develop the traits the scene links between father and son.
These are useful questions for assessing an adaptation, not established claims that the anime changes or improves particular scenes. The available official listings confirm the English comic and an Episode 163 listing, but they do not establish which episode contains the reunion or provide a scene-by-scene comparison with the anime.

Tappytoon lists Solo Leveling as an official English comic adaptation, credits Chugong, DISCIPLES (REDICE), DUBU (REDICE), and h-goon, and notes that the epilogue is available. Its listing is a starting point for readers who want the comic itself; it does not establish detailed differences between the comic and an anime version. Tappytoon’s official comic listing carries the title and creator information.
