At the end of season three, the survivors split between two trains: Melanie Cavill stays with Snowpiercer, while Andre Layton leads the others aboard Big Alice toward New Eden. That division is the key to the final season’s opening conflict. Season four is the television series’ ten-episode final season.
Where season three leaves the survivors
AMC’s series overview describes a world frozen for more than seven years, with the remaining survivors living aboard a train that circles the globe. The train has 1,001 cars. By the season-three finale, the survivors are no longer all aboard one train.
- Melanie Cavill leads the Eternal Engine and the people who choose to remain on Snowpiercer.
- Andre Layton leads the others aboard Big Alice toward the outside world and New Eden.
The split creates two separate stories: Melanie’s group remains aboard Snowpiercer, while Layton’s group faces the challenges of New Eden and the people who control access to Big Alice.

What season four sets in motion
The official AMC+ episode guide opens with a striking signal from the sky: the Snowpiercer crew sees a rocket fly overhead. In the second episode, Melanie realizes something is wrong as Milius and his Animal Squad storm the train. These events establish that the train’s separation has not ended the danger.
Layton’s rescue dilemma
Layton wants to use Big Alice to rescue Liana, but Ruth, now mayor of New Eden, refuses. The disagreement puts Layton in conflict with the community he has helped lead. Later, Milius offers a trade—Liana for Big Alice—and Layton agrees to dock the trains at a silo.

Is season four the final season?
Yes. AMC identifies season four as the series’ final season and lists ten episodes. Its U.S. premiere was Sunday, July 21, 2024, on AMC and AMC+. The current AMC+ listing labels the final season as streaming, but availability can vary by location and change over time.
AMC Networks announced on March 14, 2024, that it had acquired exclusive U.S. linear and streaming rights to all four seasons from Tomorrow Studios. That announcement initially forecast a season-four premiere in early 2025; AMC’s later July 2024 announcement superseded that timing. The July announcement named Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs among the stars and identified Clark Gregg and Michael Aronov as new season-four cast members.

Do you need a full seasons-one-to-three recap?
This refresher gives the central setup for season four—the split between Melanie’s and Layton’s groups, their trains, and the new conflicts identified in the official episode guide. It is not a complete account of every character history or plotline from the first three seasons. If those details matter to you, revisiting earlier episodes is the more reliable option than treating this short setup as a full recap.
How the graphic novels relate to the show
The television series is based on the graphic-novel series by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette, as well as Bong Joon Ho’s film. AMC describes those works as source material; they are not a recap of the television seasons. Readers interested in the story’s origins can look for the graphic novels separately.
