A useful critical reading is that Cinderella gives its additions a clear emotional purpose and brings its fairy-tale world together through design and performance. Selected critics argue that Snow White has flashes of that promise but feels less unified. That is an interpretation of the films and their reviews—not proof that Snow White simply copies Cinderella, or a consensus about why audiences responded as they did.
Why compare these two Disney remakes?
Disney describes Snow White (2025) as a live-action musical reimagining of its 1937 animated film. Directed by Marc Webb and written by Erin Cressida Wilson, it stars Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot and runs 1 hour 49 minutes. The likely “10-year-old remake” in this comparison is Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella (2015), which Disney’s film page confirms was directed by Branagh.
The comparison is less about whether one film copies the other than about how each adapts a familiar story. Does new material deepen the tale’s emotional center? Do the characters, performances, music, and visual design feel as if they belong to the same world? Those questions help explain why a remake can make substantial changes and still feel faithful in spirit—or make changes that feel disconnected.
Ingredient one: changes with a clear purpose
A remake does not have to reproduce every beat of its source. It does need a reason for changing them. The strongest additions tend to develop the story’s emotional throughline rather than announce that the old version needs correcting.

Cinderella makes kindness its organizing idea
In a 2015 Disney Files Magazine feature, Branagh recalled asking producer Alli Shearmur, “What if we made a movie where kindness was a superpower?” The question, as the feature describes it, opened a discussion about heroism. It offers a concise way to understand the film’s adaptation strategy: the familiar heroine’s kindness is not just a trait to preserve, but an idea the retelling can make central. Disney Files Magazine’s feature on Cinderella provides the account.
TIME’s review of the 2015 film praised it as a reinvention that builds on the original without loudly trying to improve it. That distinction matters: a remake can add texture while still letting the source’s appeal carry the story. TIME’s review of Cinderella also highlighted the settings, costumes, and the leads’ early meeting as part of its success.

Snow White divides critics on its revisions
The 2025 film gives Snow White a more active journey. The Atlantic’s Shirley Li considers that a compelling change, but argues that other revisions, songs, dialogue, and digital imagery do not consistently support it. In her reading, the heroine’s modernization is an appealing idea that the surrounding choices sometimes undercut. Li’s review in The Atlantic makes that tension central.
Associated Press reviewer Jake Coyle likewise describes a clash between contemporary updates and the old tale, while praising Zegler’s performance and pointing to awkwardness in the digital dwarfs, songs, and characterization. Coyle’s AP review is critical, but it is not the only response: TIME called Snow White a surprisingly pleasurable Disney remake and credited Zegler’s charm. TIME’s 2025 review is an important counterpoint.

Taken together, these reviews support a narrower point than “the remake failed because it changed too much.” The critical question is whether the changes reinforce one another. An active heroine can be a meaningful update; the story around her still has to make that new direction feel earned and coherent.
Ingredient two: a fairy-tale world that holds together
Design and performance are not separate decorations around a story. Settings and costumes establish the world; actors give it human weight; music and supporting characters help determine whether its emotional tone feels consistent. When those parts reinforce one another, the fantasy can feel tangible even when it is extravagant.

TIME’s praise for Cinderella points to that kind of integration, from its visual design to the early interaction between the leads. By contrast, AP’s criticism of Snow White identifies friction between its live-action performers and conspicuous digital figures, along with songs and characterization that do not always settle into one tone. The Atlantic similarly sees the film’s imagery and other revisions as at odds with its more active heroine.
That does not mean digital characters or new songs are inherently a problem. The useful test is whether they feel like parts of the same story and serve its emotional direction. The selected reviews differ on how well Snow White passes that test, which is why the two-ingredient comparison is a critical interpretation rather than an objective verdict.

What opening weekend can—and cannot—tell us
Opening figures provide commercial context, not an explanation of audience motives. AP reported that Snow White opened with an estimated $43 million domestically and $44.3 million internationally, for an $87.3 million worldwide launch, in March 2025. The same report described the film’s budget as above $250 million; that is a reported figure, not a final audited cost. AP’s March 2025 box-office report gives the figures.
Disney reported a $67.9 million domestic opening for Cinderella in March 2015. The Walt Disney Company’s announcement records that opening. These are domestic opening figures from different years, not inflation-adjusted or like-for-like lifetime grosses. They cannot establish that a particular adaptation choice caused one film’s result, and they do not substitute for audience research.

What the earlier remake got right
The most defensible answer is not that Snow White should have copied Cinderella more closely. It is that both films show how much a remake’s changes depend on their execution. In the selected criticism, Cinderella benefits from a guiding idea—kindness as a form of heroism—and a fairy-tale presentation that critics found cohesive. Snow White also has a potentially strong update in its more active heroine, but some critics found its songs, dialogue, digital imagery, and characterization pulling in different directions. TIME’s favorable response is a reminder that the result is not universally judged the same way.
