The AFL chose Snoop Dogg to headline the 2025 Grand Final pre-game show, aiming to make the day a wider celebration of music and culture. The booking drew negative press and criticism before the match, and AFL CEO Andrew Dillon defended it as suitable for a family audience. That controversy does not establish that all Australians opposed the choice: the available reporting provides no representative national poll.
What the AFL announced
On 11 August 2025, the AFL announced that Snoop Dogg would headline the Telstra Pre-Game Entertainment at the Toyota AFL Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The show was produced with Mushroom Group, with Telstra as presenting partner. In the AFL’s announcement, CEO Andrew Dillon said the league wanted Grand Final Day to celebrate “culture, energy, and entertainment” beyond the match, adding: “Snoop fits that brief better than anyone.” AFL announcement, 11 August 2025.
Snoop described the booking as an honour and said he looked forward to celebrating with fans. The announcement framed the choice as part of the AFL’s effort to make the event an entertainment occasion as well as a football match; it did not set out a comparison with other potential headliners.
Why the booking became controversial
ABC reported on 1 September that reaction to the American rapper’s selection had been largely negative and that Dillon backed the decision. That description belongs to ABC’s account of the reaction; it is not a measurement of Australian opinion as a whole. The sources available do not establish a representative poll or a reliable national split between support and opposition. ABC report, 1 September 2025.

The booking also landed amid wider debate about conduct and inclusion in the AFL. The coverage documents criticism and the league’s response, but does not establish one shared reason behind all objections. It is more accurate to describe a public controversy than to claim that Australia, collectively, rejected the headliner.
How the AFL defended its choice
Dillon’s defence focused on the intended audience and the character of the show. As reported by the AFL, he said: “What I can say is that our pre-match entertainment on AFL Grand Final day will be family-friendly and consistent with the audience at the MCG and those watching the broadcast.” AFL report on Dillon’s defence, September 2025.

The rationale was therefore about fit: the AFL presented Snoop as a draw for a major national event and said the performance would suit its stadium and broadcast audience. The reported criticism shows that the booking was contested, but the available evidence does not include an audience-satisfaction study, a booking fee, or a measured effect on viewership.

The AFL annual report says 100,000 fans were at the MCG and that the match broadcast reached millions. The episode illustrates the tension in booking entertainment for a football event with a broad audience. The AFL emphasized reach, celebration, and a family-friendly show; criticism before the match challenged the choice. The artists who appeared combined an international headliner with Australian performers, but the sources do not establish that this balance resolved the disagreement.
