Shawn Michaels says his substance use and behavior damaged his friendship with Triple H so badly that the two men went a year without speaking. In his 2015 interview with WWE.com, Michaels recalled that Kevin Nash urged him to stop using and make amends; Michaels then called Triple H, asked forgiveness, and says they rekindled their friendship. Triple H’s own recollection, published in a foreword to Michaels’s autobiography, describes how Michaels’s addictions pushed him away—and how relieved he was to hear a clear, sincere voice on the call.
How Michaels says the friendship broke down
Michaels described the rift in a 2015 interview with WWE.com, published around the release of his autobiography, Wrestling for My Life. “Triple H and I had not talked in a year,” he said. He connected the estrangement to his addiction and behavior, rather than presenting it as a disagreement over wrestling or a single dispute.

In Michaels’s account, a moment involving his young son made him confront the effect of his impairment on people close to him. He recalled that Kevin Nash called and told him to stop “that stuff” and make amends with Triple H. Michaels described Nash’s advice as part of what prompted him to make a change and reach out. His interview does not establish a precise medical or treatment timeline, so the episode is best understood as his retrospective account of a turning point.
The call that renewed their friendship
Michaels says he phoned Triple H and asked for forgiveness. He recalled that they both wept and said, “We re-kindled our friendship.” The emotional details and the causal link to Nash’s intervention come from Michaels’s own recollection; they should not be mistaken for an independently documented account of every step in the reconciliation.

Triple H’s perspective appears in the foreword to Wrestling for My Life, reproduced in a book preview. He wrote, “But ultimately, Shawn’s addictions and self-destruction had pushed me away.” He also recalled feeling relieved when Michaels called and sounded clear and sincere. That account complements Michaels’s telling, while remaining Triple H’s retrospective recollection as presented in the book.

The estrangement and reconciliation took place against a period in which Michaels was away from in-ring competition. WWE’s career profile says a serious back injury kept him out for more than four years; Michaels’s interview dates his return to 2002. The sources connect addiction and injury in the broader story of his career, but they do not establish a detailed medical or treatment chronology that would support a more specific causal claim.
