After some fans commented on his appearance, he first joked that he was “big boned,” then posted a fuller response on April 18: he had expected to return around the WWE Draft but received an early call-up. In a later interview, he said the comments did not bother him and discussed how a hoped-for WrestleMania match with Gunther affected his motivation at the time.
What happened when Sheamus returned to Raw?
On April 15, 2024, Sheamus came back to Raw after an approximately eight-month absence and beat Ivar. Contemporary coverage noted that online reaction addressed both his return and match and comments about his appearance. Some fans used the word “fat”; that was their characterization, not an objective assessment of his health or body.
What did Sheamus say in response?
His first response was a joke
Sheamus initially joked that he was “big boned,” a brief answer to the remarks reported at the time.
His April 18 post explained the early return
On April 18, he posted a longer response on X. Wrestling Inc. reproduced his explanation that he had been aiming to return around the Draft but got called up earlier than expected. He wrote: “I was aiming for the Draft & got an early call-up.” He also thanked supporters. His post included a joke about “sleeping in the gym”; it should not be read as a factual account of his training schedule.

What did he later say about the criticism and his physique?
In an interview excerpt discussed by Wrestling Inc. on January 18, 2025, Sheamus said the comments had not bothered him. He connected his motivation and physique at the time to disappointment that a hoped-for WrestleMania match with Gunther did not happen. As he put it, “No that’s on me, mate,” and, “So then I just kind of took the foot off the gas, probably drank too many Guinness, enjoyed myself too much.”
That is Sheamus’s own explanation of how he felt and what he did; it does not independently establish a cause for any perceived change in appearance. The sources provide no relevant weight, health, or body-composition measurement.
