In a July 2018 interview, Dhadak director Shashank Khaitan described the film as an adaptation of Sairat, not a remake. He said he wanted to carry forward what moved him about Nagraj Manjule’s Marathi film while telling a story shaped by different characters and settings. His account also sits alongside a release-era debate: some viewers and critics argued that Dhadak’s polished style and less explicit treatment of caste softened concerns central to Sairat.
What Shashank Khaitan said about Dhadak and Sairat
In Devarsi Ghosh’s July 14, 2018 interview for Scroll, Khaitan pushed back on calling Dhadak a straightforward remake. “Dhadak is an adaptation and not a remake,” he said, while acknowledging the relationship to Manjule’s 2016 Marathi film. Scroll’s introduction described Dhadak as the official Hindi remake of Sairat; the distinction between that description and Khaitan’s own framing is part of how he explained his approach.
Khaitan said he wanted to preserve what had inspired him in Sairat, but tell the story through characters rooted in Rajasthan. “There are things that we have done differently from Sairat in Dhadak,” he said. He also told Reuters, in an interview republished by Hindustan Times, that he deliberately disconnected from the original while writing: sequences that came back to him instinctively remained, but he wanted the film to have his own voice.
His stated principle was to follow the story and characters as he understood them: “What was important was staying true to myself and the story I am telling.” That explains his intent, though it does not settle how successful the adaptation was for viewers who felt the source film’s social critique had been diluted.

Why he chose Udaipur and Kolkata
Khaitan said he selected Udaipur and Kolkata because he knew both cities and considered them visually and linguistically distinct. He argued that a setting should be reflected as the filmmaker sees it, rather than treated as a single definitive portrait. “You cannot be untrue to the characters and the region you have chosen,” he told Scroll.
That is his account of the creative choice, not a claim that either city or its communities can be reduced to one look or experience. The setting was one of the ways Dhadak marked distance from Sairat, whose story and social world were associated with rural Maharashtra.

How Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor prepared
Khaitan described an extended preparation period with leads Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor. According to his Scroll interview, they spent about 15 days in Udaipur meeting local people and learning about the city and the characters’ social and economic circumstances. These details come from the director’s description of the process; the interview does not independently document the actors’ preparation beyond his account.
In the Reuters interview republished by Hindustan Times, Khaitan also discussed casting newcomers and said his focus was on quality rather than box-office expectations. That perspective reflects his stated production priorities, not a guarantee about how audiences would receive the film.

The debate over Dhadak’s look and its treatment of caste
Before and after release, criticism focused on the contrast between Dhadak’s polished appearance and Sairat’s more raw style, as well as on whether the Hindi adaptation made caste less explicit. In the Scroll interview, Khaitan defended the film’s visual choices as consistent with his own perspective and the settings he had chosen. He also argued that films about the same place need not look alike.
After the film opened, Khaitan acknowledged that the criticism about caste representation had force. In a July 27, 2018 Indian Express report, he said caste and class were conveyed visually, but added: “Apparently, we should have been a bit more open about that, which is a lesson learnt.” A PTI report carried by India Today recorded a similar reflection: he said the experience would make him more sensitive when approaching such a subject again.

Khaitan’s explanation and later acknowledgement help clarify the choices he made, but neither erases the criticism. The disagreement was about more than visual finish: it concerned how directly the adaptation made caste visible in a story whose source film was widely discussed for that dimension.

The release date changed between the original announcement and the film’s arrival. Dharma Productions announced a planned July 6, 2018 release on November 15, 2017; by the time Scroll published its interview on July 14, 2018, the film was listed for July 20.

How to read Khaitan’s interview today
The interview is useful as a record of the director’s intentions: he wanted to adapt rather than duplicate, chose places he knew, and prepared the leads around the characters’ setting. The subsequent response adds an important qualification: he later accepted that the film could have been more direct about caste. Read together, the comments show both the creative case Khaitan made for Dhadak and the unresolved question its reception raised about what an adaptation should preserve from Sairat.
