Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran is a vivid, stylistically wide-ranging account of Shakira processing upheaval and rebuilding confidence. Its strongest idea is that healing does not follow one mood or musical path; its main weakness is structural, as a run of earlier singles makes the album feel at times like a new statement joined to a recent-hits collection. The result is compelling in its emotional breadth, though not always unified as an album.
What is Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran about?
Shakira has described the record as a retrospective concept album: it took shape from life events she did not choose, rather than from a preplanned concept. In a March 25, 2024 interview with the Associated Press, she said its common thread is genuine life experience and the processing of intense emotions. She also resisted reducing it to one breakup narrative: “This is not a divorce album.” She said it contains many experiences, including pain and triumph, and moves through emotional “ups and downs and valleys and peaks.” (Associated Press interview)
That distinction matters to the listening experience. The title—“Women No Longer Cry”—can sound like a declaration of triumph, but the album does not present healing as a simple switch from hurt to strength. Its emotional premise includes vulnerability, self-recognition, resilience, and confidence. Shakira has put the point plainly: “No one should tell any woman how she’s supposed to heal and lick her wounds,” as quoted in Apple Music’s album editorial.
How does the album sound?
The album’s palette is broad rather than tied to one genre. The Recording Academy describes it as high-gloss Latin pop drawing on reggaeton, bachata, and corrido. In the AP interview, Shakira also named Afrobeat, Mexican regional music, and rock among its influences. These are useful signposts, not rigid classifications: the point is how sharply the arrangements and moods shift from track to track. (Recording Academy; Associated Press)

- Dance-floor pop and reggaeton: Apple Music highlights “La Fuerte,” “Tiempo Sin Verte,” and “Puntería” as dance-oriented anchors.
- Bachata: “Monotonía,” featuring Ozuna, gives the album a more restrained, swaying register.
- Música mexicana and regional styles: “(Entre Paréntesis)” with Grupo Frontera and “El Jefe” with Fuerza Regida bring those sounds into the album’s orbit.
- Ballads: “Acróstico” and “Última” make room for a more exposed, reflective Shakira.
The range suits an album about emotional change: the sound does not insist that every stage of recovery feel the same. Shakira’s distinctive presence is the connecting element, though the shifts can also make the record feel more like a sequence of contrasting modes than one continuous musical argument.
Does the track sequence hold together?
Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran is Shakira’s 12th studio album and her first in seven years, released March 22, 2024, according to Sony Music Canada. The sequencing creates a productive tension: part of the album is new work, while much of it gathers singles listeners had already encountered.

Sony counts eight new songs, one remix, and seven previously released singles. It also reported, at release, 3.7 billion combined Spotify plays for those seven earlier tracks. That is Sony’s promotional figure for the singles before the album arrived—not a current streaming total or a measure of the album’s quality. The accumulated singles provide familiarity and momentum, but they can interrupt the feeling of discovering one deliberately paced album from beginning to end.
The album’s catalog counts also differ by listing. Apple Music presents 17 songs and a 51-minute runtime; Sony’s release page lists 16 principal tracks plus “Puntería (Vinyl Version).” Treat those as different catalog presentations, not as evidence of two materially different albums.

What do critics think?
Critical response has been mixed, with disagreement over whether the album’s stylistic ambition adds up to a satisfying whole. The captured Metacritic listing showed a 74/100 average across nine reviews, including scores of 80 from Rolling Stone, 70 from Pitchfork, and 40 from The Guardian. These numbers describe that review set at the time captured and may change if the aggregator’s listings change. (Metacritic)
Pitchfork heard a return to Shakira’s Spanish-language roots and recognized the record’s big stylistic swings, while arguing that something linking it to what made her an icon is missing. The Guardian was more negative, calling much of the album forgettable and criticizing its execution. (Pitchfork; The Guardian)

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The divide points to the album’s central trade-off. Its shifts can make the emotional story feel open and lived-in, but the collection of styles and previously released tracks can also weaken the sense of a single, tightly shaped work. Whether that feels like range or unevenness depends on how much cohesion a listener wants from an album-length statement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it worth listening to?
Yes, especially for listeners interested in Shakira’s Spanish-language work, her broad Latin-pop palette, or an album that treats recovery as complicated rather than neatly resolved. Start with “Puntería” for bright, dance-oriented pop, “(Entre Paréntesis)” for the Grupo Frontera collaboration, and “Acróstico” or “Última” for the quieter emotional register. Listeners who prioritize a consistent sound and a mostly unfamiliar track sequence may find the album less satisfying as a front-to-back experience.
