Severance season two’s finale, “Cold Harbor,” aired March 21, 2025, so this is a retrospective guide to where the major characters stood immediately before it—not a current preview. Apple lists “Cold Harbor” as the season finale. The central question was not only whether Mark could reach Gemma, but whether his innie would choose the life he had built over the outie’s plan.
Where Mark stood: two versions, increasingly different goals
By the end of season two, Mark Scout’s innie and outie were no longer pursuing the same thing. Outie Mark wanted to recover Gemma, his wife, from Lumon. Innie Mark had developed relationships and an identity of his own, making the outie’s goal a demand that could cost him the life he knew.

Their first face-to-face conversation made that conflict explicit. Actor Adam Scott said the two Marks began in alignment and then diverged. Executive producer and finale director Ben Stiller described the hallway decision as the culmination of that split. Stiller also said the team wanted an ending that would not rely on a cliffhanger merely for its own sake. Read the Los Angeles Times interview.
Creator Dan Erickson described Mark’s choice as an assertion of the innie’s existence and love, while acknowledging that it combines righteous and selfish motives. That makes the decision more than a simple refusal to help his outie: it is a claim that the innie has interests of his own.

Gemma and Helly: the two relationships at the heart of the choice
Gemma / Ms. Casey
Gemma, Mark’s wife, was alive on Lumon’s testing floor. In “Cold Harbor,” innie Mark helped her toward an exit and then turned away. Erickson described her response as devastated and confused, but said it was unclear how much she understood about the severance procedure. The finale does not settle her full understanding or what happens to her afterward. Erickson discussed the finale’s unresolved questions with TV Insider.
Helly R. / Helena Eagan
Helly’s bond with innie Mark made his decision personal as well as existential. Her position was complicated by the fact that her outie is Helena Eagan, part of the family behind Lumon. Britt Lower said the preceding events left Helly questioning whether she had a family; Dylan’s return and the memory of Irving helped prompt her to go back to Mark. Her return put her inside the innie’s life, not simply on the side of his outie’s rescue plan. Lower and Stiller discussed the finale with the Los Angeles Times.

Where the rest of the ensemble stood
Irving
Irving’s outie left by train. TIME noted that the season gave his outie little screen time even as Irving’s inner life became clearer. His future remained open at the end of the finale; the departure did not resolve what he would do next. TIME’s finale discussion treats that trajectory as unresolved.
Dylan
Dylan’s marriage and family remain important to his arc and connect it to the season’s wider questions about love, identity and divided lives. His return also helps prompt Helly to go back to Mark. TIME praised the season’s Dylan storyline; that is the publication’s assessment, not confirmation of what his future holds.

Milchick
Milchick appeared increasingly conflicted about his role in Lumon’s system. TIME highlighted his confrontation with Drummond and the moment he scrutinizes himself in a mirror. Those actions suggest a character questioning his position, but the finale does not establish where his loyalties will ultimately lie.
Miss Huang and Ricken
TIME’s writers considered both arcs underserved or insufficiently developed. That is a critical judgment about the season’s storytelling, not an in-world explanation or a confirmed statement about what comes next.

Dr. Mauer
The warning “You’ll kill them all” remained deliberately unclear. Erickson declined to say who “them” refers to, so the intended target or group is unresolved rather than a confirmed threat to any particular character. TV Insider’s interview records Erickson’s response.
