What is “Chikhai Bardo” about?
Apple TV’s official synopsis sets up the episode’s central contrast: “The origins of an old romance intersect with a deadly present threat.” Released February 28, 2025, the episode moves between Mark and Gemma’s past and their present circumstances, bringing their relationship into focus alongside revelations about Gemma. Apple TV Press lists it as season 2, episode 7.

Jessica Lee Gagné directed the episode, with Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman credited as writers in the Reddit post-episode thread; TV Obsessive’s recap also identifies those credits. Gagné discussed the episode and its filming locations with Dichen Lachman on the February 28 edition of The Severance Podcast, where Lachman spoke about Gemma and Mark’s relationship and Ms. Casey’s wig. Why did some viewers find it moving and unnerving?
Some of the strongest reactions centered on the emotional force of Mark and Gemma’s story and the episode’s visual approach. BGR’s February 28, 2025 roundup collected selected responses from Reddit and Threads, including one Threads user’s description of the episode as “one of the most unnerving (but beautiful) episodes of television” and praise for Gagné’s cinematography and direction. That is one viewer’s reaction, not a measured consensus.

The Reddit discussion likewise includes viewers expressing grief, shock and admiration. Some commenters also proposed interpretations of Lumon’s experiments. Why did other viewers see the episode as a detour?
The response was not uniformly enthusiastic. In a TV Obsessive recap, Caemeron Crain wrote that the episode “doesn’t quite feel like an episode of Severance.” Crain’s criticism reflects how the structure—alternating Mark and Gemma’s history with their present circumstances—worked for that viewer: its sustained focus on the relationship and flashbacks could feel like a departure from the show’s usual momentum rather than a satisfying extension of it. Neither perspective should be mistaken for an objective ranking of the episode.

Read alongside Crain’s review and Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ snapshot, they show why the episode can be described as divisive in the material available—but not that fans generally agree on a single verdict.
