Snapchat announced its 2016 Flashback on January 16, 2026, as a way to revisit the moments and visual style associated with that year. Snapchat’s public Lens directory also lists a digital 2016 Nostalgia Lens, but the sources available do not confirm that the broader Flashback campaign is still active for every account or region in October 2026.
What is Snapchat’s 2016 Flashback?
Snap Inc.’s January 16, 2026 newsroom announcement described a special 2016 Flashback intended to make it easier for Snapchatters to revisit the moments, Lenses and “vibes” associated with the era. It framed the experience as a nostalgia feature, not a physical product or camera accessory. The announcement’s title was “2016 Energy, 2026 Mindset: Connecting with Friends Never Goes Out of Style.”
Snapchat’s public directory separately lists a 2016 Nostalgia Lens by Snapchat, tagged with terms including nostalgia, 2016, vintage and retro. That listing establishes a related digital Lens entry; it does not establish that every account can access it or that the larger Flashback campaign remains active.
How do I get the Snapchat 2016 filter?
Start by looking for the 2016 Nostalgia Lens. Snapchat’s general instructions describe several ways to find Lenses, but they do not guarantee that this particular Lens will appear for every user.

- Check the official listing: Open Snapchat’s 2016 Nostalgia Lens directory page and try opening it in Snapchat.
- Look from the camera: Open Snapchat’s Camera screen, swipe through the Lens carousel and tap a Lens if the 2016 option appears.
- Search Lens Explorer: Use Lens Explorer to look for “2016” or “nostalgia.” Snapchat also says users may be able to unlock a Lens from a shared Snap or Snapcode.
These are Snapchat’s general discovery routes, not a promise of availability. If the Lens or campaign does not appear, the cited sources do not establish whether that is due to region, account, device or timing. Snapchat’s January announcement confirms the launch date, but neither it nor the public Lens listing confirms universal availability in October 2026.
Are Snapchat Filters and Lenses the same thing?
No. Snapchat uses the terms for different features. A Lens is a camera experience selected before you capture a Snap. A Filter is a design overlay you add after taking a Snap by swiping through available options. Snapchat’s support pages explain how to use Lenses and how to add a Filter.

People often say “2016 filter” casually, but the official directory entry is a digital Lens. It is not a physical filter, clip-on lens or other accessory.
