What Parker Finn said about future Smile films
In an interview published by TheWrap on October 25, 2024, Finn said he was open to continuing the franchise if there was demand. He also stressed that he would want a new installment to feel considered and genuinely different, rather than made quickly just because the first films succeeded.

“If there was a demand for more, that would be wonderful. I would want to make sure that it’s moving forward in a way that feels thoughtful … that’s exciting and brand new … I need to have that bolt of electricity from the beginning to carry me through.”
TheWrap reported that Finn likes the possibility of new installments that “keep getting crazier and crazier and more unexpected.” The idea is creative ambition, not a promise that each film will be more extreme than the last.

How Smile 2 broadened the story
Smile 2 is Finn’s follow-up to Smile (2022), but it changes both the setting and the central character. The sequel follows Skye Riley, a pop star about to begin a world tour, as terrifying events collide with the pressures of fame and her past, according to the Directors Guild of America’s report on an October 27, 2024 screening Q&A.
TheWrap reported that Finn wanted a different way into the sequel rather than a repeat of the first film: the story moves to New York City and follows a globally known performer played by Naomi Scott. Finn also valued keeping the entity mysterious instead of explaining its origins exhaustively. Those choices show how he expanded the premise in Smile 2; they do not establish what a future story would involve.

The Associated Press review reads the film’s focus on fame, public breakdown, and its ending as leaving room for another chapter. That is a reviewer’s interpretation of the story, not an official announcement.
Do the comments confirm a third Smile film?
No. Finn spoke conditionally about what he might want to do if there were demand for more. The cited interview does not announce a specific next film or provide a release schedule or production status. The available sources also do not give a named statistic directly measuring audience demand for another installment.

Commercial results help explain the franchise’s context, but they cannot by themselves establish that a third film has been approved. TheWrap reported that Smile 2 had earned $51 million worldwide after one week in release as of October 25, 2024; that is a dated early-release snapshot, not its lifetime total. The same article reported production budgets of $28 million for Smile 2 and $17 million for the first Smile, whose global gross it put above $200 million.

At the DGA screening Q&A, Finn described the first Smile’s move from a streaming plan to a wide theatrical release: “Just by nature of the evolving industry, we happened to be one of the very first films to get switched the other way around from streaming to theatrical which was incredible.” That remark is about the first film’s release path, not a statement about whether another sequel will be made.
