Sky Force Review: Thrilling Dogfights, Less Engaging Ground Drama

Sky Force’s dogfights provide its biggest thrills, while its search for a missing pilot and ground-level drama are less consistently engaging.

Sky Force is most compelling when its pilots are in the air: its fast-moving dogfights provide the 2025 Hindi-language war drama’s clearest excitement. On the ground, the story of a commander trying to uncover what happened to a missing pilot is less consistently gripping. The result is a dramatized, patriotic war film whose action and emotional mystery do not always pull in the same direction.

What is Sky Force about?

Directed by Sandeep Kewlani and Abhishek Anil Kapur, Sky Force is set around an Indian Air Force attack on Pakistan’s Sargodha airbase during the 1965 India-Pakistan war. Akshay Kumar plays Ahuja, a commanding officer, and Veer Pahariya plays the young pilot Vijaya. The film moves between aerial combat and Ahuja’s later effort to find out what happened after Vijaya went missing. Scroll.in lists the film’s runtime as 125 minutes. (Scroll.in; India Today)

This is not a documentary account of the operation. Reviews describe a film that draws on military history while fictionalizing people and events for dramatic effect. Scroll.in and The Indian Express identify Vijaya with the real pilot AB Devayya, but the film’s story should be understood as dramatization rather than a verified reconstruction of the historical record. (Scroll.in; The Indian Express; NDTV)

Do the dogfights deliver?

They are the film’s strongest draw, though reviewers disagree about how convincing the effects are. Scroll.in praises the aerial sequences as fast-paced and smoothly staged, finding a briskness there that the ground scenes lack. The Guardian, by contrast, compares the aerial visuals to older video-game cutscenes, while NDTV says the CGI action and sound can overwhelm the story. (Scroll.in; The Guardian; NDTV)

#1 Best Overall
Aircraft Carrier / Fighter Pilot 4K UHD + Blu-ray IMAX HDR Combo
  • Two IMAX documentaries from director Stephen Low. Aircraft Carrier: Guardian of the Seas puts you aboard a Nimitz-class carrier during RIMPAC with 5,000 crew running flight ops. Fighter Pilot rides along with Capt. John Stratton at Operation Red Flag over the Nevada desert — F-15s, F-16s, F-117, B-1, B-2 and more. Filmed for IMAX and giant-screen theaters. This combo includes 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray with HDR.

That split matters if you are choosing the film chiefly for its aviation action. The sequences provide momentum and scale, but the visual spectacle may feel less persuasive if you want consistently immersive effects or a quieter sound mix. The film’s action is not a consensus triumph: its impact depends partly on how much you value pace over realism.

Why does the ground-level story feel weaker?

The film’s second strand turns on Ahuja’s search for answers about Vijaya, giving the combat a personal aftermath. NDTV finds that later investigation emotionally engaging, while Scroll.in argues that the film’s competing aims—including its political disputes and Ahuja’s conflict with senior officers—make the drama diffuse. The Indian Express sees a related imbalance in the choice to center Ahuja, arguing that Vijaya should have been the lead. (NDTV; Scroll.in; The Indian Express)

That unevenness explains the contrast in Scroll.in’s headline: the “catfights” are the less engaging ground-level disputes, not a second kind of action. The mystery gives the film a reason to look beyond the dogfights, but its emotional center can feel divided between the missing pilot and the officer pursuing his story.

How does the film handle patriotism and its characters?

Sky Force follows familiar war-film themes of duty, sacrifice and national pride. The Guardian sees it as bound to those conventions; India Today is more receptive to its comparatively muted jingoism and its depiction of respect between soldiers. These are critical interpretations, not evidence that the film settles the historical or political questions surrounding the conflict. (The Guardian; India Today)

The women’s roles are a notable limitation. Scroll.in calls the women characters disposable, and The Indian Express says they are largely confined to wives and domestic life. India Today places greater value on the emotional dimension of the missing pilot’s story, but that does not erase the narrow scope the other reviewers identify. Sara Ali Khan, Nimrat Kaur and Sharad Kelkar appear in supporting roles alongside Kumar and Pahariya. (Scroll.in; The Indian Express; India Today)

Is Sky Force worth watching?

If aerial combat is your priority, Sky Force offers enough speed and spectacle to make its strongest passages worthwhile. If you want an equally compelling investigation, nuanced ground-level conflict or a broad range of perspectives, its divided focus and familiar character roles may disappoint. Its critical reception reflects that trade-off: reviewers praise different parts of the film while questioning whether the whole comes together.

The film was released on January 24, 2025, according to India Today. (India Today)
