Sit-at-the-Bar September: The Old-School Dating Trend, Explained

Sit-at-the-Bar September encourages people to go to a bar alone and stay open to conversation. It can create an opportunity to meet someone, but no evidence shows it beats dating apps or guarantees a date.

Sit-at-the-Bar September is a social-media prompt to go out alone, sit at a bar and stay open to meeting people face to face. It can make conversation possible, but there is no evidence that it reliably leads to dates or works better than dating apps. The more grounded aim is to enjoy the outing and get comfortable in your own company, whether or not you meet anyone.

What is Sit-at-the-Bar September?

The idea is simple: choose a bar, go by yourself and sit at the bar rather than treating the evening as a mission to find a partner. Laurie Cooper is associated with the September call in coverage by The Washington Post and EL PAÍS. Cosmopolitan reports that a similar summer dating challenge had been introduced earlier by comedian and podcast host Jared Freid; that account does not establish that every version of the idea began with one person.

The trend is often framed as a response to dating-app fatigue and a return to face-to-face encounters. That framing describes the appeal, not a proven advantage: lifestyle coverage has not measured how often a solo bar visit produces a date.

Does sitting alone at a bar actually work?

It may create an opportunity for conversation that an app cannot: you are physically in the same room as other people, and a brief exchange with a bartender or a neighboring patron can develop naturally. But conversation is not guaranteed, and neither is romantic interest. The available reporting provides no success rate and does not show that going to a bar is more effective than using dating apps.

Therapist and dating expert Michelle Herzog advises readers, as quoted by Cosmopolitan, to define success more broadly: “going out alone to meet people is not about meeting your future partner—it’s about enjoying yourself and practicing being comfortable in your own company.” That is a practical way to approach the outing without making the evening’s value depend on a stranger’s response.

How to try it without making it a high-pressure mission

  1. Choose a place you feel comfortable. Pick a venue where sitting at the bar is welcome and where you would be content to spend time even if no one approaches you.
  2. Make conversation optional. You can exchange a few words with the bartender or a nearby patron if it feels natural. Neither you nor anyone else owes a conversation, and a friendly opening is not a promise of a date.
  3. Put your phone away if you want to be more available. Looking up can make it easier to notice the room, but there is no need to treat phone use as a test of whether you are doing the trend correctly.
  4. Bring something to do if that helps you settle in. A book or crossword can make a solo visit more enjoyable; The Washington Post columnist describes both as things she sometimes does. They are optional ways to occupy yourself, not techniques proven to attract someone.
  5. Leave or ask for help if the situation turns uncomfortable. If someone pesters you or you fear for your safety, involve venue management. That advice comes from Washington Post columnist Emily Heil.

What should you wear, and should you bring a book?

There is no special outfit or accessory required by the trend. Wear something appropriate to the venue that lets you feel at ease; the point is to go out, not to dress for a guaranteed encounter. A book or crossword is fine if you would enjoy having it, but it is equally fine to sit without one. EL PAÍS notes these as common audience questions, but the coverage does not establish a single right answer.

How is it different from dating apps?

A bar outing makes face-to-face interaction possible in the moment; dating apps mediate introductions and matching through a screen. Those are different ways to encounter people, not evidence that one method produces better romantic outcomes. Which feels more comfortable or appealing depends on the person and the evening. The available coverage does not quantify a comparison or establish that this trend is a replacement for apps.
