Molly Ringwald as Samantha Baker
Ringwald remained active in film and television after playing Samantha. A June 2023 Us Weekly cast retrospective notes her later appearances in The Kissing Booth films, Riverdale, and Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. TheWrap’s June 2024 Brat Pack update also mentions her role in Feud: Capote vs. the Swans. These are dated credits, not a complete list of her current projects.

Ringwald also wrote Getting the Pretty Back and When It Happens to You: A Novel in Stories, and released the jazz album Except Sometimes in 2013, according to Us Weekly. Recalling how Hughes came to write the film around her, she wrote: “He told me later that, over a July 4th weekend, while looking at headshots of actors to consider for the movie, he found mine, and decided to write another movie around the character he imagined that girl to be.”
Anthony Michael Hall as the Geek, also known as Farmer Ted
Hall followed Sixteen Candles with two other major Hughes-era teen films, The Breakfast Club and Weird Science, then built a long screen career. Us Weekly’s 2023 account lists work in The Dead Zone, The Goldbergs, The Dark Knight, and Halloween Kills; TheWrap’s 2024 roundup adds Bosch: Legacy. The titles illustrate a career spanning television and film rather than a single genre.

Michael Schoeffling as Jake Ryan
Schoeffling left acting after a relatively small number of later film roles, including Vision Quest, Mermaids, and Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken. A July 2025 Us Weekly report on his life outside Hollywood says he moved to Pennsylvania and opened a woodworking design business with his wife. The report emphasizes that little public information is available about the business and that Schoeffling has not given interviews since retiring from acting. It does not establish a current business listing or provide direct access to his present life.

Haviland Morris as Caroline
Us Weekly’s June 2023 profile says Morris continued acting, appeared in a television guest role in 2019, and became a licensed real estate agent. That account is a snapshot from 2023, not confirmation of her employment status in 2026.

Gedde Watanabe as Long Duk Dong
Watanabe continued acting and voice work, including roles in the animated Mulan films. Us Weekly also reports that he directed the short film She Had It Coming in 2020. The article recalls his 2014 reflection on the film’s enduring audience, but does not supply a newer personal update.
Justin Henry as Mike Baker and Blanche Baker as Ginny Baker
Henry’s later screen work included a break from Hollywood and a cameo in 2019. He also co-founded the Slamdunk Film Festival in 1998, according to the 2023 cast roundup. Blanche Baker went on to work in acting, directing, producing, writing, and theater. Those accounts describe career histories; they do not confirm either performer’s current schedule.

The Cusacks’ small roles preceded prominent careers
Joan Cusack as Geek Girl #1
Joan Cusack’s film role was brief, but her subsequent career was not. TIME’s 2014 30th-anniversary retrospective points to Working Girl, Addams Family Values, School of Rock, and voice work in Toy Story. Us Weekly’s 2023 account also notes her screen credits and shop ownership. Neither retrospective establishes a current work schedule.
John Cusack as Bryce
John Cusack’s supporting part in Sixteen Candles came early in a career that later included leading roles. TIME’s 2014 retrospective highlights Say Anything, Grosse Pointe Blank, Being John Malkovich, and High Fidelity. These are historical career landmarks, not evidence of his current projects.

What the cast’s different paths say about the film’s legacy
The actors’ trajectories range from continued screen work to a move into another profession and a retreat from public life. The available accounts support those contrasts, but not a ranking of the cast by success or income. Us Weekly’s 2023 retrospective also points to a storyline that many viewers now regard as dated: Jake trades his drunk girlfriend Caroline for Samantha’s underwear. That element sits alongside the film’s continued place in discussions of 1980s teen movies, rather than disappearing from them.
