Tim Hunkin’s announced web series was The Secret Life of Components, a set of roughly 45-minute episodes about how basic components work. In its February 26, 2021 announcement, Make: named glue, switches and bearings as example subjects and said new episodes would appear on Hunkin’s YouTube channel. That is a historical announcement, not confirmation of a recent launch or of what is available there today.
What is The Secret Life of Components?
Make: introduced The Secret Life of Components as a web series about the everyday parts and technologies that make things work. The announcement framed it as a return to the subject matter associated with Hunkin’s earlier television series, The Secret Life of Machines, while describing the new project as focused on basic components. It did not provide enough detail to compare the two series’ episode catalogs or formats.
Make: described the planned episodes as roughly 45 minutes long, with topics including glue, switches and bearings. These are examples from the announcement, not a complete episode list. Make:’s February 26, 2021 announcement was later updated to say the first episode could be watched.
Where did Make: say viewers could watch it?
The announcement said new episodes would appear on Tim Hunkin’s YouTube channel. That identifies the intended destination in 2021; it does not establish the current episode count, release schedule or whether every episode remains available. Hunkin’s official site identifies him as an engineer and cartoonist and lists work across engineering, television, video and animation: Tim Hunkin’s website.

Why the practical-video format mattered to Hunkin
Hunkin connected practical online videos with the informal knowledge traditionally passed along through apprenticeships. As quoted in Make: on February 26, 2021: “I now learn a lot from watching practical YouTube videos and realize they can teach the sort of informal tips that used to be part of traditional apprenticeships.” The point helps explain the series’ appeal: a component-focused episode can show not only what a part does, but practical details that are harder to convey in a short definition.
