Selena Gomez did not announce a permanent departure from social media in January 2024. On January 9, she said she was “off social for a while” and wanted to focus on “what really matters”; the next day, she posted an Instagram cooking video with Gordon Ramsay. The quick return makes the announcement best understood as a brief break, not a lasting exit.
What Selena Gomez said—and when she posted again
After the January 7, 2024 Golden Globes, a video of Gomez talking with Taylor Swift and Keleigh Sperry drew online speculation about their conversation. The Independent reported that Gomez clarified it in an Instagram comment before sharing a separate Story on January 9: “I’m off social for a while. I’m focusing on what really matters.” The Story showed Benny Blanco with two children. The Independent’s January 12, 2024 report says she posted a cooking video featuring Ramsay the following day.
So, did she come back to Instagram? Yes: she was posting again the next day. That establishes a quick return to Instagram, but it does not establish how much she used other platforms during the interval.
What “what really matters” meant
Gomez’s message framed the pause as a choice to focus on what mattered to her. The post’s accompanying video featured Blanco with children, but Gomez did not specify in the message exactly what she meant by the phrase. It is safer to treat it as her personal explanation for stepping back, rather than infer a more specific reason from the video.

How this announcement fits with her other breaks
Gomez has stepped back from social media at different times and described those breaks in different ways. The episodes should not be conflated: a temporary January 2024 announcement is not the same as her earlier extended absence from Instagram or a separate break in 2023.
| When | What is established | Scope or follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| September 2018 | Gomez wrote that she was grateful for social media’s voice but also for the ability to step back and “live my life present to the moment I have been given.” ABC News / Good Morning America, September 25, 2018, also reported that she had previously said she avoided direct access to Instagram to make time for friends. | A break announcement; the cited report does not give a duration. |
| October 2023 | In a January 2024 retrospective, The Independent quoted Gomez describing a break prompted by the “horror, hate, violence and terror” in the world. The Independent, January 12, 2024. | A distinct earlier break; the cited report does not establish its duration. |
| Four-year Instagram absence, discussed in 2022 and 2024 | At the April 24, 2024 TIME100 Summit, Gomez said she took four years off Instagram and let her team post for her, calling it “the most rewarding gift I gave myself.” TIME, April 24, 2024. | Her statement concerns Instagram; it does not establish that she was completely offline or absent from every social platform. |
| January 9–10, 2024 | She announced she was off social “for a while,” then shared the Ramsay cooking video the next day. The Independent, January 12, 2024. | She resumed posting on Instagram within roughly a day. |
| September 2024 | In an interview reported that month, Gomez said she was on a break at the time but had chosen not to announce it: “I learned not to say that anymore.” She also described working out and taking care of herself during that break. The Independent, September 9, 2024. | Describes the interview period, not her current status. |
| September 2025 | The Associated Press reported that Gomez announced her marriage in an Instagram post. AP, September 28, 2025. | Confirms later Instagram activity, not her posting frequency today. |
Why she has described stepping back as worthwhile
Gomez has spoken about both the frustration of Instagram and the value of distance from it. At the April 2024 TIME100 Summit, she said, “I find it frustrating. Then I get a little mouthy and I want to defend the people I love.” In the same appearance, she described her four-year Instagram absence as rewarding. In 2018, she wrote about stepping back so she could live in the present. These comments offer context for her choices, but they do not mean that every break had the same trigger or duration.

Is Selena Gomez off social media now?
The January 2024 announcement does not answer that question for today. The available later reporting confirms Instagram activity in September 2025, but does not establish Gomez’s exact social-media status or posting frequency as of October 8, 2026. Her September 2024 decision not to announce a break also means that an absence of a new public announcement would not, on its own, settle the question.
