The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives shows a range of personal relationships to Latter-day Saint faith and culture—not a formal split between “modern” and “traditional” Mormons, and not a representative portrait of the Church’s millions of members. The contrast is a useful way to discuss tensions the series puts on screen, but the Church itself does not classify members in those terms.
What “modern vs. traditional” means on the show
Here, “traditional” describes expectations some cast members present around religious observance, sexual restraint, modesty, marriage, and motherhood. “Modern” points to visible parts of their lives that may negotiate or depart from those expectations: influencer careers, beauty culture, income earned through social media, and frank public conversations about sex and relationships.
These are descriptive lenses for particular storylines, not mutually exclusive identities. A person can be devout and work as an influencer, or question a religious expectation without rejecting every aspect of faith. Taylor Frankie Paul told TIME that the show explores “so many different ways of living Mormonism” and called it “a spectrum.” That is her description of the series, not an official Church category. TIME’s interview with Paul discusses that framing.
Are the cast members Mormon?
The cast members have varied relationships to the Church and to public religious identity. The Los Angeles Times describes differences in how the women approach faith and their influencer personas; the Associated Press notes that many cast members have left the Church or are no longer active. Individual status can change, so it is better not to assume a person’s current beliefs from a past episode or a label used in coverage.

The series follows Utah-based #MomTok personalities and their friendships, reputations, family lives, and public careers. Hulu describes it as a reality series about Mormon mom influencers facing pressure after a swinging scandal. It is edited entertainment centered on specific people and conflicts—not religious instruction or a study of Latter-day Saints as a population. The AP also cautions that the cast cannot represent millions of Latter-day Saint women.
What the Church teaches—and what the show depicts
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints identifies as Christian and says Jesus Christ is central to members’ lives. It teaches that the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are distinct personages united in will and purpose, rather than one substance as in the classical formulation of the Trinity. These are teachings of the Church; they should not be treated as a description of what every cast member personally believes or practices. The Church’s overview is available in its “What do Latter-day Saints Believe?” page.

On gender and family, the Church says women and men are equal in God’s sight, and that spouses form an equal partnership in family leadership. It also describes women serving in leadership, teaching, missionary, and other roles. Those formal teachings provide context for the show’s conversations about marriage and motherhood, but they do not establish that all women experience family expectations in the same way. The Church states: “In the family, a wife and a husband form an equal partnership in leading and raising a family.”
How the contrast appears in cast life
Faith and observance
Some storylines foreground religious expectations and the effort to reconcile them with personal choices; other moments center on individual doubt, distance from the Church, or public identity as an influencer. The show and reporting describe a range, not a reliable ranking of who is more or less Mormon. A scene, relationship status, or public comment alone cannot establish a person’s beliefs.

Sex and relationships
The series’ “soft swinging” storyline is a reported relationship episode involving people associated with the cast. It is not a Church practice. The Church’s stated standard is monogamy. Its history page says plural marriage was practiced by a minority of early Latter-day Saints and discontinued after the 1890 Manifesto; the Church says it is prohibited today. The Church’s “Polygamy” page states: “Today the practice of polygamy is strictly prohibited in the Church, as it has been for over a century.” Unaffiliated groups that practice plural marriage should not be conflated with the Church.
Marriage, motherhood, and work
The cast’s roles as mothers, spouses, and social-media personalities put private family expectations alongside public work. Influencer income and visibility can give the women a platform and a career, while also turning reputation and personal relationships into part of the show’s story. These tensions belong to the cast’s circumstances; they do not prove that Latter-day Saint women generally experience family or work in the same way.

Clothing, appearance, and privacy
Temple garments are sacred religious underclothing associated with temple covenants. The Church asks media to discuss them respectfully. A cast member’s clothes—or what viewers think they reveal—are not a dependable measure of belief, temple participation, or worthiness. The Church’s temple-garment guidance explains their religious significance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the series is not a snapshot of Latter-day Saint women
Reality television selects and edits material around personalities and conflict. The AP places the show alongside a broader range of Latter-day Saint creators: some explain their beliefs, while others make content about rules they break. It also reports that the Church receives limited discussion in the series despite the title’s religious framing. The resulting picture can illuminate the people featured, but it cannot stand in for the diversity of Church members.

There is no established population measure that sorts Latter-day Saint women into “modern” and “traditional” categories, and the cast is not a survey sample. The AP’s reporting explicitly warns against treating the cast as representative of millions of women.
What to take from “modern vs. traditional”
The distinction helps describe a set of tensions the show makes visible: observance and self-definition, sexual expectations, family roles, influencer work, public image, and the difference between official teaching and an individual’s practice. It becomes misleading when it is treated as an official Church divide or as a verdict on the faith of a particular cast member. For this series, the most accurate reading is a cast-specific spectrum of choices and conflicts, viewed against—but not substituted for—the Church’s stated teachings.
