The episode’s setup brings the celebrity guests into Charlie’s exclusive male support group. Apple TV’s synopsis says Alan is lonely and brooding, and hopes to join the group; Rose, Charlie’s stalker, tries to cheer him up. TVLine’s twentieth-anniversary retrospective also describes Penn, Costello and Stanton as cameoing as members of Charlie’s group.
What does “overshadowed” mean here?
It works as an interpretive headline, not a proven comparison. A contemporary TV Guide announcement published August 24, 2004 previewed Penn, Costello and Stanton for the September 20 season premiere. That confirms they were announced together, but it is not a review of the broadcast or evidence that one guest drew more attention.

The episode listings and retrospective establish that Stanton appeared, but do not provide comparative screen time, audience response, critical reception or evidence that he was more prominent than Penn. Without those measures, it is more accurate to say Stanton shared the episode with Penn than to present “overshadowed” as a documented result.
When did the episode air, and when did Harry Dean Stanton die?
TV Guide’s 2004 announcement identified the season premiere as scheduled for September 20, 2004. Stanton died on September 15, 2017, according to his Television Academy biography. He was alive when the episode premiered; “now deceased” describes his later biography, not his status at the time of the cameo.
