The bird-sacrifice story is a claim by Gene Deal, Sean “Diddy” Combs’s former bodyguard—not an independently verified event. Deal recounted it in The Honorable Shyne, a Hulu documentary about rapper Moses Barrow, known as Shyne. The alleged episode was said to have taken place before the verdict in Combs’s 2001 trial over the 1999 Club New York shooting.
What did Gene Deal claim happened?
In Deal’s account, Combs stopped in Central Park before going to court for the verdict. Deal described a white bird being thrown into the air and falling to the ground. Rolling Stone Australia printed Deal’s description: “Puff took this white bird and threw it up in the air, and the bird just fell to the ground, boom, like it was a brick.” Rolling Stone Australia reported the quotation on November 19, 2024.

The Independent’s account adds that Deal described smoke he thought might have come from burning sage, a man holding a Bible, prayer, and someone laying hands on Combs. These are details attributed to Deal, not findings established in court. The Independent reported the account on November 19, 2024. Its article said it had approached Combs’s representatives for comment; it did not report a response.
Is the bird-sacrifice story verified?
The reporting presents the episode as Deal’s recollection. The sources cited here do not independently establish that it happened, so it should not be described as a proven event. The distinction matters: a reported account from a former bodyguard is not the same as a court finding or independent confirmation.

- From music mogul to controversy, Sean Combs' life is full of highs and lows, but the central mystery remains: What did Diddy do?
Which trial verdict was this about?
Deal’s story concerns the verdict in the case arising from the 1999 shooting at Club New York in Manhattan—not Combs’s later federal case. The shooting injured three bystanders, according to The Independent. The trial concluded in 2001: Combs was acquitted of the shooting-related charges, while Shyne was convicted. Rolling Stone Australia reported that Combs faced weapons-possession and attempted-bribery charges; it also reported that Shyne was convicted of assault, reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a pistol, and was sentenced to 10 years.
How is this different from Combs’s 2025 federal verdict?
The 2025 federal case involved different charges and a different jury decision. The jury found Combs guilty on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution and not guilty of racketeering conspiracy and two sex-trafficking counts. The Guardian reported the verdict on July 2, 2025. That case is separate from the 2001 shooting trial addressed in Deal’s bird story.
