A September 2024 report said Michigan prisoner Derrick Lee Cardello-Smith had obtained a $100 million default judgment against Sean Combs. That figure describes a reported state-court judgment—not a confirmed payment, and the reviewed court orders do not establish whether it was later vacated, reversed, satisfied, or remains enforceable. The underlying sexual-assault account was Cardello-Smith’s allegation, not a finding made after a trial.
What the $100 million judgment refers to
On September 10, 2024, Law&Crime reported that Cardello-Smith had won a $100 million default judgment against Combs in a Michigan case. The report described Cardello-Smith’s account of an alleged sexual assault; it should be understood as an allegation, not as a fact established by a trial verdict. Law&Crime’s September 10, 2024 report.
A default judgment is distinct from a judgment entered after the parties present evidence and a court decides the merits. The $100 million amount was reported as the judgment; the available material does not verify that Combs paid or that Cardello-Smith collected it.
What happened in federal court
Cardello-Smith’s action was filed in Lenawee County Circuit Court on or about June 10, 2024. Combs removed the action to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan on October 7, 2024. In a November 15 order, the federal court found that Combs had not been properly served and denied Cardello-Smith’s requests to send the action back to state court. Eastern District of Michigan, ECF No. 35 (November 15, 2024).

That ruling concerned service and where the case would proceed. It did not decide whether the alleged assault occurred, nor does it by itself answer whether the reported state-court default judgment was ultimately set aside or remains enforceable.
Later federal orders are separate procedural developments
Federal orders from 2025 describe additional developments in proceedings involving Cardello-Smith. They should not be treated as a direct ruling on the final status of the original state-court judgment.

- January 22, 2025: An order later recounted that a case against Combs had been dismissed with prejudice on this date. The order also issued a final warning about further duplicative, frivolous, fraudulent, or harassing filings. Eastern District of Michigan, ECF No. 141 (April 28, 2025).
- June 30 and September 19, 2025: A later order recounted a restriction requiring Cardello-Smith to obtain leave before filing new lawsuits or other documents in the Eastern District of Michigan. On September 19, the court denied his motion for leave to apply to waive appeal filing fees, citing the three-strikes rule. Eastern District of Michigan, ECF No. 182 (September 19, 2025).
The September order stated: “Prisoners are not automatically entitled to proceed in forma pauperis.” The fee ruling addressed permission to proceed without paying appeal filing fees; it was not a decision on the alleged assault or a determination of the state judgment’s enforceability.

The reviewed orders do not establish whether the original state-court default judgment was later vacated, reversed, satisfied, or remains enforceable as of October 8, 2026. They also do not establish that Combs currently owes $100 million. The careful answer is that a $100 million default judgment was reported in September 2024, while its ultimate status is unresolved in the court material cited here.
