In April 2025, Sean “Diddy” Combs pleaded not guilty to new charges in Manhattan federal court as his lawyers asked to question prospective jurors about their views on sex, drugs, violence and related subjects. Prosecutors objected that the proposed questionnaire was too broad and included questions they considered irrelevant or better suited to oral questioning by the judge. The dispute concerned jury selection—not a finding about the allegations. The case later ended in a mixed verdict: Combs was convicted on two counts and acquitted on three.
What the defense wanted jurors to be asked
Combs’s attorneys submitted a proposed questionnaire for people summoned to serve at trial. They sought to probe whether prospective jurors could fairly consider evidence that might include sexually explicit videos or video showing physical assault, and asked about attitudes toward sex, drugs, violence and people with multiple sexual partners. The defense also raised concern that negative media coverage could cause potential jurors to prejudge the case. These were the defense’s stated concerns, not findings by the court. The Associated Press reported on the proposed questionnaire and the parties’ dispute on April 14, 2025.
Why prosecutors objected
Prosecutors challenged the questionnaire’s length and scope. AP reported that the government described the defense proposal as containing 72 questions, some with subparts, and argued that some were “utterly irrelevant to the ability to serve on a jury.” Prosecutors said certain topics could be handled in person by the judge, if they needed to be addressed at all. That was the prosecution’s position, not a ruling that the questions were improper. AP’s account includes the parties’ competing arguments.
The charges and plea at that stage
Contemporaneous coverage said a superseding indictment added sex-trafficking and transportation-to-engage-in-prostitution charges involving a second alleged victim. Combs pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors alleged force, threats, coercion and violence; the defense argued the government was criminalizing consensual conduct. Those competing descriptions were allegations and arguments in a criminal case, not established facts at the time of jury selection. CBS News covered the trial background and questionnaire dispute in May 2025. AllSides’ April 14, 2025 report also describes the plea and requested juror topics.

What happened after the questionnaire dispute
The April coverage described a pretrial screening dispute; it does not establish which of the proposed questions the judge ultimately allowed or whether the full questionnaire was administered. AP reported at the time that questionnaires were expected to go to hundreds of prospective jurors near the end of April, questioning was expected to start May 5, and opening statements were then anticipated around May 12. Those dates were forecasts when published, not a record of what ultimately occurred. AP’s report gives the schedule anticipated at the time.
The verdict and sentence
The jury returned its verdict on July 2, 2025. It found Combs guilty on counts 3 and 5 and not guilty on counts 1, 2 and 4. On October 3, 2025, the court imposed a 50-month prison sentence, five years of supervised release and a $500,000 fine. The mixed verdict does not mean every allegation in the indictment was proved: the jury acquitted Combs on three counts. The DiddyDocket case chronology records the verdict and sentencing entries.
