Spoilers for the entire film: The Doug who travels back in time saves Claire and prevents the ferry bombing, but he dies in the underwater explosion. The Doug who meets Claire on the pier is a different version: he belongs to the changed present and has not made that fatal trip. The film suggests an altered timeline, but leaves its mechanics loose rather than explaining a fully consistent set of rules.
What happens in the ending?
Snow White begins as a way for the investigators to observe the past. Doug eventually uses the project to go back himself. In the altered events, he reaches Claire and intervenes in Carroll Oerstadt’s bombing plot. Doug and Claire drive the bomb-laden vehicle into the river, stopping the ferry disaster. Claire gets out; the time-traveling Doug dies in the explosion.
After Claire is rescued, another Doug approaches her on the pier. The film’s plot account distinguishes this man from the Doug who went back and died: he is the Doug of the changed present, who has not yet taken that trip. The film’s plot summary supports that distinction.
Is the Doug on the pier the same Doug who saved Claire?
No—not in the straightforward reading of the ending. The Doug who traveled into the past paid for the rescue with his life. The man on the pier is a version of Doug who remains alive because, in the changed present, he has not made the fatal journey. It is not the time-traveling Doug being resurrected after the explosion.

The simplest way to understand this is that Doug’s intervention changes the present: Claire survives, the ferry is saved, and a Doug who never made the trip is still there to meet her. That is an interpretation of how the ending fits together, not a complete rulebook supplied by the film. An academic discussion of the film considers it in terms of alternate realities, but viewers should not assume the movie settles every question about how its timelines work.
Why does Claire seem to recognize him?
The reunion echoes an earlier exchange between Doug and Claire. Claire has lived through the events with the time-traveling Doug, so the repeated dialogue carries emotional history for her. The Doug at the pier, by contrast, has not experienced that journey. The moment feels like déjà vu because the two characters arrive at the same encounter with different memories.

That emotional asymmetry fits the film’s design. D23 describes the story as a love story unfolding in reverse, with Doug drawn toward a woman whose past holds the key to the catastrophe. D23’s film entry identifies Doug Carlin as Denzel Washington’s character and Claire Kuchever as Paula Patton’s.

Snow White is the fictional device that lets the investigators view past events and, eventually, send Doug back. It is not evidence of real time-viewing or time-travel technology. Tony Scott said he wanted the film to feel like “science fact,” and Washington discussed the filmmakers’ interest in surveillance; those comments describe creative intent and research, not proof that the premise is scientifically possible. Scott’s 2006 interview also acknowledges that the film fudges its rules. Washington’s CBS interview summarizes the story as: “Carlin travels back in time to save the woman and ends up falling in love with her.”

So it is safer to say the ending suggests a changed timeline than to claim that Snow White follows a precise, consistently explained physics model. Scott described the emotional premise this way: “The heart of it is a love story, but it’s a love story where the two protagonists aren’t even in the same room together for the first two thirds of the movie.” That comment appears in his interview about the film.
