Netflix’s 2020 drama Hillbilly Elegy casts Gabriel Basso as J.D. Vance, Amy Adams as his mother Bev, and Glenn Close as his grandmother, Mamaw. Owen Asztalos portrays young J.D. The film is an adaptation of Vance’s memoir, not a documentary; Netflix’s published synopsis confirms those principal role pairings, while its cast listing does not establish every actor’s character.

Who are Bev and Mamaw in the film?
Netflix’s synopsis describes Mamaw as the grandmother who raised J.D. and Bev as his mother, who struggles with addiction. Those details describe the film’s presentation of the characters; Hillbilly Elegy is a dramatization based on Vance’s memoir, not a documentary record. Netflix Media Center.
How the drama differs from the memoir
TIME describes the movie as a more narrowly personal adaptation, focused on Vance’s childhood and Yale experience. The memoir gives more space to his Marines experience and offers broader analysis of social, economic, and political shifts. The two versions can therefore be compared both by the life events and relationships they include and by how much context and reflection they provide. TIME.

What Glenn Close said about playing Mamaw
Close told TIME, “I want to remove my face one step from how I look,” while discussing her preparation for the role. The remark describes her approach to the performance; it is not evidence that the film reproduces Mamaw’s appearance exactly. TIME.
