The 2005 comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin brought Steve Carell, Catherine Keener, Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen and a broad ensemble together under writer-director Judd Apatow. In the years since, its cast members have moved into dramatic roles, major franchises, producing and directing. Here’s a dated look at selected career milestones reported through August 2025—not a complete roster of everyone’s current projects.
The film and its cast, then
Released in 2005, The 40-Year-Old Virgin was Judd Apatow’s feature directorial debut. Apatow and Steve Carell co-wrote it. Carell played Andy Stitzer, the middle-aged man whose friends try to help him navigate dating; the ensemble included Catherine Keener as Trish, Paul Rudd as David, Romany Malco as Jay, Seth Rogen as Cal and Elizabeth Banks as Beth. Jane Lynch and Leslie Mann were among the other co-stars.
The film’s lasting appeal rests partly on how its supporting cast became a collection of familiar comic and dramatic performers. Their paths after the movie were varied: some became leading actors, while others added producing, directing or franchise work to their careers.
Where the main cast went after the film
Steve Carell as Andy Stitzer
Carell moved from the film’s breakout lead to a sustained career in both comedy and drama. The August 19, 2025, Us Weekly retrospective points to his work on The Office, leading film roles, and later dramatic performances in Foxcatcher and The Morning Show. Universal’s anniversary materials also identify him with the Despicable Me franchise. These are career milestones, not a claim about his newest project in 2026.

Catherine Keener as Trish
Keener had already earned an Academy Award nomination for Being John Malkovich before playing Trish. The August 2025 retrospective notes another Oscar-nominated performance in Capote, as well as later roles in Get Out and Joker: Folie à Deux. Her work has continued to span independent films and major studio productions.
Paul Rudd as David
Rudd continued collaborating with Apatow and became widely known to a new generation as Scott Lang, also called Ant-Man, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The August 2025 account describes his career as ongoing; its mention of a planned 2026 appearance is not treated here as a confirmed current release update.

- 4 FILM FAVORITES: ROMANTIC COMEDY (DVD MOVIE)
Seth Rogen as Cal
Rogen continued working with Apatow and developed a substantial producing partnership with Evan Goldberg. His later career has included acting, writing and producing, including the television comedy The Studio. The August 2025 retrospective reports strong Emmy recognition for that series, but this article does not repeat its nomination total because it was not verified against the Television Academy.
Romany Malco as Jay
Malco’s subsequent screen credits include Think Like a Man, The Duff and Tijuana Jackson: Purpose Over Prison. He also had a recurring role on the television drama A Million Little Things, which ran from 2018 to 2023. These selected credits show a career spanning comedy and drama; they are not a current-project list.
Elizabeth Banks as Beth
Banks went on to act in The Hunger Games franchise and build a career behind the camera. Her directing credits include Pitch Perfect 2, Charlie’s Angels and Cocaine Bear. Her trajectory is one of the clearest examples from the cast of moving between acting and directing.
Leslie Mann as Nicky
Mann continued her recurring collaborations with Apatow and later led This Is 40, another feature directed by Apatow. The August 2025 retrospective highlights those connections, but does not establish a complete current slate for her.

The 20th-anniversary reunion and release
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment marked the film’s 20th anniversary in 2025. Judd Apatow joined Carell, Keener, Jane Lynch, Kat Dennings and Gerry Bednob for an anniversary discussion at the Academy Museum. It was a dated reunion event, not evidence that every original cast member took part.
Universal announced the The 40-Year-Old Virgin 20th Anniversary Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on July 29, 2025, with the edition available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and digital beginning August 12, 2025. The company also announced a theatrical return from August 22 through August 28, 2025, at 800 theater locations; those screenings have passed. Universal’s announcement confirms the release, but not present-day retailer inventory or streaming-service availability.

For the 4K disc, Universal lists a BD-100, 16:9 1.85:1 presentation with Dolby Vision/HDR10 and English Dolby Atmos. The listed theatrical runtime is 1 hour 57 minutes; the unrated version runs 2 hours 13 minutes. The release includes both cuts and more than two hours of bonus material. These specifications describe the announced 4K disc and should not be assumed to apply to every regional edition or retailer package.
What “now” means for this cast update
The career snapshots above are anchored to reporting published in August 2025 and Universal’s 2025 anniversary announcement. They show how selected performers developed after the film, but do not establish every cast member’s complete work slate as of October 2026. Jane Lynch, for example, is included in the film’s cast and the anniversary discussion, but the available dated information here does not support a fuller career update. The same care applies to supporting performers and cameo roles: this is a guide to the principal names, not an exhaustive cast census.
