SETI Institute senior astronomer Seth Shostak did not forensically disprove David Grusch’s claims about alien bodies. In a July 31, 2023 opinion article, Shostak argued that Grusch and other proponents had not presented convincing public evidence of recovered alien craft or remains. That is a criticism of the evidence made public, not proof that every allegation is false.
What did David Grusch claim about alien bodies?
At a July 2023 House Oversight subcommittee hearing, former intelligence officer David Grusch said the government possessed debris from crashed alien spacecraft and biological remains from alien bodies. The hearing record establishes that Grusch made those claims; it does not independently verify them. The House hearing record documents the testimony.
That distinction matters: testimony is evidence that a person made a statement. It is not, by itself, physical evidence that the reported objects or remains exist or are extraterrestrial.
What was Shostak’s criticism?
In his SETI Institute commentary, Shostak said the public had not been shown convincing photographs of alien hardware and questioned why material of enormous scientific and economic value would be withheld from researchers. He wrote: “But admitting that aliens could be here is a far cry from claiming that they are here.”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Those are Shostak’s arguments and inferences, not results of a laboratory analysis or forensic examination of alleged bodies. The article’s central point is that extraordinary claims should not be treated as scientific discoveries without evidence that can be examined. It does not establish that no such material could exist. Read Shostak’s July 31, 2023 article.
What evidence has been made public?
The sources here establish that Grusch made claims in Congress and that Shostak judged the publicly available evidence unconvincing. They do not provide forensic results from any alleged alien corpse, or independently testable proof that the reported remains are extraterrestrial. The categories should not be conflated:

- Testimony: Grusch’s hearing statements record what he said.
- Publicly examinable evidence: Shostak argued that convincing public evidence of alien hardware had not been presented.
- Official review: AARO later described findings from a defined review of reported allegations and incidents.
In a 2024 media transcript about its historical-record investigation, the Department of Defense said the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) found no actual UFO materials in the allegations or incidents it reviewed. That is AARO’s stated conclusion within the scope of those reports; it should not be expanded into a finding about every possible alleged program or material. Read the Department of Defense transcript.
How are SETI searches different from UFO investigations?
SETI searches are deliberate experiments looking for possible signals. Researchers can apply checks for interference and equipment or software problems. UAP reports, by contrast, are often observations that were not made as part of a planned search for extraterrestrial signals. A sighting and a signal search are therefore not interchangeable forms of evidence.

The SETI Institute made that distinction in its 2021 explanation of the UAP story. A UAP observation may merit investigation, but its unexplained status alone does not identify it as extraterrestrial. See the SETI Institute’s explanation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does SETI say extraterrestrial life is impossible?
No. The SETI Institute says it has found no clear indications of life beyond Earth and has not confirmed an extraterrestrial SETI signal. It notes that intriguing past detections, including the Wow! signal, were not detected again. Those statements describe the results so far; they do not show that life elsewhere is impossible.
