At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Mark Hamill joined the conversation about The Wild Robot, the DreamWorks Animation adaptation of Peter Brown’s illustrated novel. Hamill voiced Thorn, a grizzly bear, and described how Brown’s book drew him into the project. The panel was scheduled for Saturday, July 27, in Room 6BCF; the advance listing named writer-director Chris Sanders, Lupita Nyong’o and Kit Connor, while a report published the next day described Hamill as a surprise addition.
What was the SDCC panel?
Comic-Con International’s official Saturday 2024 program grid listed “Dreamworks Animation’s The Wild Robot” and cautioned that the schedule was subject to change. The grid confirms the program listing, but does not show a readable time-and-room pairing for this session. Comic-Con International’s Saturday 2024 newsletter
A July 24 preview scheduled the panel for 4:00–5:00 p.m. PDT in Room 6BCF. It announced a conversation with writer-director Chris Sanders and actors Lupita Nyong’o and Kit Connor. Because that listing appeared before the event, it establishes the planned details and announced participants, not a definitive attendance record. FilmBuffOnline’s July 24 preview
A July 28 report said Hamill was a surprise addition to the panel. The report, credited to io9/Gizmodo source material, also covered his remarks about the film and his role.

The same report quoted Hamill comparing the challenge of describing the story to explaining Star Wars to people who had not seen it: “I feel like back in the day, when I was trying to describe Star Wars without people having seen it.” These are remarks attributed to Hamill in the report, not a complete panel transcript.
What did Hamill say about Thorn?
In the report, Hamill described Thorn in the context of the animals’ need to restrain themselves and work for the greater good. That framing connects the bear’s role to the story’s larger emphasis on cooperation among wildlife, rather than treating him simply as a character Hamill voiced.

How does the film relate to Peter Brown’s book?
The Wild Robot is an animated feature adapted from Peter Brown’s illustrated novel. The panel account says Hamill sought out the book before agreeing to consider the project, making the source material part of his explanation of his connection to the film.
The film follows Roz, a robot voiced by Lupita Nyong’o, after she is marooned on an island and encounters its wildlife. The book is an illustrated novel; the film adapts that story into an animated feature. The available panel reporting establishes that connection, but does not provide enough detail to assess specific changes between book and film.
