Sinners feels like a modern masterpiece because its striking choices serve one another: the blues gives the story its pulse, the Mississippi setting makes isolation palpable, and shifts in genre, performance, and image format sharpen the danger. That is a critical reading, not an official six-point ranking. So what does Sinners do right? These six choices help explain why its parts add up to something unusually cohesive.
1. It makes the genre blend part of the drama
Written and directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack as they return to 1932 Mississippi and plan to open a juke joint. The Directors Guild of America describes the story as a gothic-horror blend set against the dangers of the Jim Crow era; the Associated Press also points to its mix of supernatural horror, gangster drama, romance, blues, and action. DGA Associated Press
The combination matters because the juke joint is more than a backdrop for a series of genre turns. It represents a chance to make something communal and alive in a world structured by violence and constraint. The supernatural threat does not replace that human conflict; it presses against the same hope. The film can move between crime-story tension, romance, performance, and horror because each mode tests what the brothers are trying to build.
2. The blues is a force in the story, not just its soundtrack
Coogler has said the film grew from his connection to his uncle, who introduced him to the blues. In an interview with The Atlantic, he described the story as a love letter to his uncle and explained that he added the cross-era musical sequence after reaching a moment when Sammie plays. “It wasn’t even in my first draft,” he said. “When I got to that moment of Sammie playing the blues, that’s when it hit me that I had to do this.” The Atlantic

That account helps explain why music feels structural rather than decorative. A performance can open a passage between the intimate scene and a much larger sense of history, memory, and spiritual possibility. The music belongs to the characters’ world, but the film also treats it as something that can travel beyond the limits of that moment.
3. The Mississippi landscape makes isolation feel double-edged
Coogler told the DGA that the Delta’s flatness and isolation shaped the film’s visual approach. He described that isolation as potentially peaceful, but also frightening if something goes wrong. That tension is legible in the setting: open space can offer room to breathe, yet it can also leave people exposed and far from help. DGA

The landscape therefore does more than establish period and place. Its openness can make the characters’ plans feel possible while underlining how little protection they have. That quiet pressure gives the horror a foundation in the physical world before anything supernatural takes hold.
4. Michael B. Jordan makes the twins distinct—and keeps them in the same story
Michael B. Jordan plays both Smoke and Stack. The AP notes that he differentiates the brothers through posture, mannerisms, and voice, giving the audience a way to read their relationship without relying only on names or plot explanation. The contrast matters because the twins share history but do not simply function as interchangeable versions of one character. Associated Press

The production also had to make their shared scenes work. According to the AP, some scenes used conventional coverage, while others used a halo rig and a double to capture Jordan’s performance for compositing. The reported methods explain how the film could place both brothers together; they are not, by themselves, a frame-by-frame assessment of every effect. The dramatic achievement is that the technical problem serves a clear performance distinction rather than calling attention to itself as the point of the scene.
5. The changing frame follows the film’s shifts in emphasis
Coogler and cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw combined 5-perf 65mm Ultra Panavision with 15-perf 65mm IMAX. Coogler linked wide framing to the Delta’s flatness and isolation, and taller framing to heightened emotion, musicality, spirituality, or horror. The format changes are not a shortcut to feeling; they direct attention as the story changes register. DGA American Cinematographer

The American Society of Cinematographers reported that about 20 percent of the film was shot with IMAX cameras. That is a production figure, not the share of the movie shown in IMAX theaters. Exhibition also varied: according to the ASC, standard theaters showed the full film in 2.76:1, while digital IMAX venues unable to project 70mm presented the IMAX sequences at 1.90:1. A home release should not be assumed to reproduce every theatrical format option.

Some of the film’s visual details gain force through recurrence. ILM visual-effects supervisor Nick Marshall has described the rattlesnake as foreshadowing a later confrontation and the recurring ravens, crows, and vultures as elements that build tension. The principle is economical: images can make danger feel as if it is gathering before the story spells out what is coming. Industrial Light & Magic

These motifs connect atmosphere to structure. Rather than treating every ominous image as a standalone scare, the film lets details accumulate, encouraging the viewer to watch the world itself for signs of a threat.
