In March 2019, Matt Damon said he was considering joining social media after seeing how widely Chris Hemsworth’s posts reached during a trip to Western Australia. Damon said it could help him communicate about Water.org’s work, but the report did not say he had created an account or launched a social media presence.
What happened on the Western Australia trip?
PerthNow reporter Krystal Sanders reported on 22 March 2019 that Damon joined the Hemsworth family for a week-long trip along Western Australia’s coast that month. Damon appeared in the background of some of Hemsworth’s videos. The report said Damon had no social media presence at the time and was considering one after seeing Hemsworth’s audience and reach up close.
The celebrated quokka selfie was Hemsworth’s, not Damon’s. PerthNow said Hemsworth’s selfie had received more than 4.1 million likes and described it at the time as his most-liked Instagram post “so far.” It also reported that Hemsworth’s video with a quokka on Rottnest Island had more than 9.2 million views in five days. Those are figures reported in 2019, not current engagement totals.
Why was Damon considering social media?
Damon’s reported explanation centered on communication. He said he could see the impact of social media through Hemsworth, who he described as being “in the middle of the social media world.” Damon also pointed to Water.org, the nonprofit he co-founded, saying social media made it harder for him to argue against getting online to communicate about the organization’s work.

PerthNow reported Damon saying, “I think I will probably move into that realm somewhere down the line.” That is a statement of future consideration, not confirmation that he joined a platform. The report also does not establish that Hemsworth’s posts or the quokka selfie alone caused a later decision.
