No: the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas 2026 special will not go ahead. The BBC, Russell T Davies and production company Bad Wolf announced the decision on June 10, 2026, reversing the plan first announced in October 2025.

Why did the BBC cancel the special?
The BBC’s June 10 update framed the decision as a choice to invest in Doctor Who’s long-term future rather than use a one-off episode to bridge the gap. It said the programme would be put out to competitive tender and that details would follow. The update did not name a winning production company or announce a replacement special or a date for the next television series.
Was the Christmas episode already in production?
No. The Associated Press reported on June 11, 2026, that Davies had confirmed his exit and that the cancelled episode had not been written. AP also reported that no actor had been approached to play the Doctor. Associated Press report
What is still happening with Doctor Who?
The June update said a previously announced Doctor Who animated series for CBeebies was in production. It also said BBC Studios would continue handling global distribution, licensing, consumer products, digital and immersive experiences on the BBC’s behalf. Those statements do not establish when the next live-action series will arrive.

Davies responded to the cancellation on Instagram, according to AP: “You’ll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who … but you’ll be waiting for MORE Doctor Who than a one-off. So it’s worth it!” The BBC’s announcement said tender details would come later; a replacement Christmas episode or a new series release date had not been announced in that update.
