It is worth trying if you enjoy offbeat sci-fi and are open to a more dreamlike, less familiar take on the franchise; if you mainly want the original show’s established rhythm and comic style, its deliberate strangeness may be a hurdle.
What is Rick and Morty: The Anime about?
The series follows Rick, Morty, Summer and the rest of the Smith family through a new story involving the Galactic Federation, a mysterious device and events across a multiverse. Morty falls for a new character named Elle, Rick is captured, and Summer joins the effort to find him. The official episode descriptions also point to family conflict and revelations between Rick and Morty. These details establish the spin-off’s premise without requiring a claim about how it fits into the original series’ continuity.
Warner Bros. Discovery announced the anime on July 11, 2024, naming Takashi Sano as director and associating him with Tower of God. The announcement scheduled an English-language US premiere on Adult Swim for August 15, 2024, followed by a Japanese-subtitled US premiere on Toonami on August 17. Those were announced US dates, not a worldwide release schedule. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement called it “an all-new anime” from Sano; that is the company’s promotional description, not a personal quote from the director.
How many episodes are in the first season?
Season 1 has ten episodes. Adult Swim lists the season in both dubbed and subtitled versions, with the same episode titles in each listing.

How is the anime different from the original?
The clearest factual differences are the production language, voice cast and story. Metacritic describes it as a Japanese anime version with different storylines and voice cast from the original. The available information supports calling it a distinct spin-off, but does not settle its continuity relationship to the main series.
Rank #2
For viewers, the bigger question is how the change in form affects the experience. The series leans into anime storytelling and imagery rather than simply reproducing the original show’s familiar format. That can make the multiverse material feel more surreal and less immediately legible. This is an evaluative distinction, not a consensus finding: whether that shift feels inventive or frustrating will depend on what you want from Rick and Morty.
Is Rick and Morty: The Anime worth watching?
It is a reasonable choice for viewers curious about a genuine stylistic detour, especially those who like science fiction that permits ambiguity and disorientation. It is a less safe recommendation for someone looking for a close substitute for the original’s pacing, humor and story structure. Treat it as its own experiment with familiar characters, rather than as a season that promises the same viewing experience.
Reviews reflect that divide. Slant Magazine’s Niv M. Sultan gave it 2.5 out of 4 and wrote that “At its most formidable, the series finds remarkable pathos amid its absurdity.” IGN’s Allegra Frank rated it 7 out of 10, saying it “veers toward inexplicable more than enjoyable” but is “never boring.” Common Sense Media’s Polly Conway called it “a trippy experiment gone wrong.” These are individual critical responses, not a definitive measure of whether it will work for you.
Aggregator snapshots also skew mixed to negative. As accessed October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes showed a 50% Tomatometer from six critic reviews and an 18% Popcornmeter from more than 250 audience ratings. Metacritic showed a user score of 2.7 out of 10 from 26 ratings, classified as “Generally Unfavorable”; it displayed no Metascore at that time. These figures can change as ratings and reviews are added. The Rotten Tomatoes series page and Metacritic page show the respective snapshots.
Where can you watch it, and is it dubbed?
Both dubbed and subtitled episode listings are available on Adult Swim’s US site, though its playback page requires a cable-provider login. Rotten Tomatoes lists HBO Max for Season 1. Streaming rights and catalogs vary by country and may change, so check the services available in your region rather than assuming either listing applies where you live.

A Blu-ray.com search result identifies a Rick and Morty: The Anime Blu-ray listing and names Warner Bros. as distributor, but that alone does not establish a current release date, edition details, special features, retailer stock or Amazon availability. Confirm the exact edition and live retailer listing before buying. Adult Swim’s franchise hub links to general Rick and Morty merchandise and viewing options, but it does not establish that anime-specific merchandise is available.
