He said his conservation values were behind the request. The change described at the time was a switch to other ingredients—not the removal of the challenges.
What change did Robert Irwin ask for?
In an interview with KIIS FM, as reported by PerthNow on March 5, 2024, Irwin said he had objected to eating African wildlife in the trials. “The one thing that I was like ‘mmm I got to change this’, was eating the African wildlife…I’m a conservationist at heart,” he said.
Irwin also said producers had changed what contestants would eat. The report quoted him saying: “They have changed it, so we’re just doing the cow, and the chicken, and the fish, and the cockroach…but it’s cool cause we really get to bring this to a whole new level.”
Why did he object to using African wildlife?
Irwin described the request as a matter of conservation: he said he was uncomfortable with eating African wildlife because he is “a conservationist at heart.” The report also said host Julia Morris supported refreshing the approach and questioned whether wildlife was necessary in those settings. That is the context reported from the interview, not evidence of a permanent production rule.

Were the eating challenges cancelled?
No. In the 2024 account, the trials continued, with cow, chicken, fish and cockroach named as the alternatives. PerthNow also reported Kyle Sandilands jokingly challenged Irwin: “You’ve ruined the show with your own opinions on life, is that right?” The article describes what Irwin said had changed then; it does not establish the full rules for later seasons or a lasting ban on particular ingredients.

The 2024 eating-trial comments should be kept separate from later changes to the series. In July 2026, reports said the Australian version was moving to Seven in 2027. Those reports said the reboot’s hosts had not been officially announced and Irwin’s return was uncertain. PEDESTRIAN.TV reported on July 23, 2026 on a request attributed to Irwin, while New Idea reported that he said: “There’s been so much change with I’m A Celeb, I know as much as you guys do.” Neither report confirms the future host lineup.
