Yes. Asked in a 2024 interview whether he would return to Marvel, Robert Downey Jr. replied, “Happily.” The answer expressed his willingness to work with Marvel again; it was not an announcement that he would reprise Tony Stark. His later announced MCU role is Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.
What Downey said about returning
After winning the Oscar for Oppenheimer, Downey was asked about returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in an interview with Esquire. ABC News reported on April 8, 2024, that he answered: “Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA. That role chose me.” ABC also reported his reference to his long relationship with Marvel Studios and his willingness to “put the jersey back on.” ABC News’ report is the source for the quoted exchange.
The comment conveyed affection for the work and openness to returning. It did not identify a project or confirm that Downey would play Iron Man again.
Would he return as Iron Man?
The 2024 answer does not establish that Tony Stark will return. Stark sacrificed himself in Avengers: Endgame, making the distinction between Downey’s willingness to work with Marvel and a specific Iron Man comeback especially important.

What his later MCU return means
In August 2024, the Los Angeles Times reported that Downey and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige had discussed a possible return, and that Downey was coming back as Doctor Doom. The report identifies the role as distinct from Tony Stark.
An Associated Press preview of Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 likewise identifies Downey as Doctor Doom and reports that he said he would not have returned if the Russo brothers had not. AP’s preview adds context to the later casting, but does not change what the earlier “Happily” answer did—and did not—confirm.

Why the wording matters
There are two separate questions: whether Downey was open to working with Marvel again, and whether Tony Stark would return as Iron Man. His reported 2024 answer addressed the first: he was willing. The later announcement confirms his return to the MCU in a different role, Doctor Doom; it does not turn the earlier answer into confirmation of an Iron Man comeback.
