Stewart said she wanted the shoot to be deliberately queer; several prominent conservative commentators objected to the image and her presentation. The documented posts show a backlash, not how widely those views were shared.
What was on Kristen Stewart’s Rolling Stone cover?
The February 2024 cover pictured Stewart topless, wearing a leather vest and jockstrap, according to LGBTQ Nation’s report. The image became a flashpoint not simply because of its revealing clothes, but because Stewart framed the shoot as an expression of queer identity and sexuality.
In describing what she wanted from the shoot, Stewart said: “Now, I want to do the gayest f**king thing you’ve ever seen in your life.” The quote and the reported reactions appeared in LGBTQ Nation’s February 15, 2024 coverage, updated March 14.
Who called the cover “disgusting,” and what did they object to?
LGBTQ Nation named conservative commentators Christopher Rufo, Oli London, Chaya Raichik and Ian Miles Cheong among those reacting online. Raichik’s response, as quoted by the outlet, was simply: “Disgusting.” Other criticism addressed Stewart’s appearance and gender expression, or portrayed her clothing and presentation as culturally or politically threatening.

These are examples of reactions from named commentators, not evidence that all right-wingers—or the public at large—shared the same view. The available coverage does not provide a representative poll or a reliable count of how prevalent the objections were. Nor should the different critics be treated as if they all made the same argument.
How did Stewart explain the image?
Stewart later defended the cover by speaking about discomfort with women’s sexuality when it is not directed toward cisgender straight men. She said: “The existence of the female body expressing any kind of sexuality that’s not designed for or desired by exclusively cis-straight males is not something people are super comfy with, so I’m really happy with it.” LGBTQ Nation reported both the statement and the backlash.

That explanation makes her intention clear: she welcomed the image as a queer expression rather than presenting it as a bid for conventional approval. Critics’ interpretations belonged to them; the cover itself was part of a magazine feature and shoot, not a statement that every viewer had to read in the same way.
How did the cover connect to Love Lies Bleeding?
The controversy arrived as Stewart was promoting Love Lies Bleeding. In its February 23, 2024 article, The Independent discussed the cover alongside Stewart’s film work and advocacy for queer films. That context matters: the image was discussed amid a broader conversation about queer visibility and gender expression, not in isolation from her public work.

Was criticism of Stewart’s family-planning comments part of the same backlash?
Some conservative commentary also criticized Stewart’s remarks about “acquiring kids.” That was a separate strand of reaction from objections to the cover image. The American Spectator’s February 16, 2024 piece addressed the family-planning comments in opinion commentary; it should not be mistaken for a report measuring the response to the photograph. LGBTQ Nation’s cover-focused article, by contrast, concentrated on the image and gender expression.
