In interviews near the season’s end in 2023, showrunner Scott Marder, executive producer Steve Levy, co-creator Dan Harmon and the principal cast reflected on those changes. Their comments about future seasons were made at that time; later official announcements provide the subsequent milestones.
Why “Unmortricken” put canon in the middle of the season
In “Unmortricken,” Rick defeats Rick Prime, while Morty encounters Evil Morty. Rather than hold a major canon installment for the season premiere or finale, the team placed it mid-season to disrupt viewers’ expectations about when the show’s larger story would advance. Executive producer Steve Levy described the choice as “a fun, surprising spot for a canon episode” in a December 11, 2023 interview with Gizmodo/io9.
The confrontation also changes the question driving Rick’s arc. Marder said that once Rick’s revenge mission had achieved its aim, the story could explore what he does without that defining pursuit. The shift made the episode consequential not only for its plot revelations, but for the character’s direction afterward.
What the cast said about Season 7’s performances
The cast’s comments focused on the distinct demands of playing the show’s characters, rather than on measurable audience response.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Ian Cardoni (Rick): Cardoni described “Unmortricken” as especially demanding to perform because it moved among different Ricks and intense emotions.
- Harry Belden (Morty): Belden singled out Evil Morty as a favorite role, describing him as cold, calculating and convinced of his own superiority.
- Sarah Chalke (Beth and Space Beth): Chalke said the two characters are recorded in distinct passes. Space Beth’s raspier, tougher sound helps set her apart.
- Chris Parnell (Jerry): Parnell enjoyed playing a less contentious relationship between Jerry and Rick.
- Spencer Grammer (Summer): Grammer praised Summer’s growing capability while emphasizing that she remains independent and rebellious.
These are the actors’ perspectives on their roles, not audience polling or performance ratings.
How the new Rick and Morty voices settled in
Season 7 introduced Ian Cardoni as Rick and Harry Belden as Morty. Both actors came onto the production’s radar fairly early, according to TheWrap’s November 8, 2023 interview with Marder and Harmon. Matching the established voices required detailed adjustments: Marder cited the need to account for Belden’s Chicago inflections and to find the right balance of gravel and pitch in Cardoni’s Rick.

Marder called voice matching a demanding process with a “weird high bar of excellence”: if the imitation works, viewers may not notice the effort behind it. He said the team felt Cardoni and Belden had “nailed it” by “That’s Amorte.” Marder also described audience feedback as a “tidal wave of positivity,” an interviewee’s impression rather than a published poll or rating.
What “on schedule” meant to Dan Harmon
Harmon characterized Season 7 as the first season in which production was “on schedule.” He framed that as a change in how the team could approach its work: with less attention consumed by coping with constraints, it could make strategic creative decisions about what appeared on screen. This was Harmon’s assessment of the production experience, not a published schedule measurement or quantified claim about productivity.

What the team said was next—and what was later confirmed
The timeline matters: Marder’s comments about development were made in December 2023, before the later official announcements. He said the team was writing Season 9 and had plans for some things through Season 10, and expressed interest in another “Interdimensional Cable” episode. Those remarks described the team’s status and creative interests at the time; they were not plot or release-date promises.
| When | What was said or announced | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| December 11, 2023 | Marder said the team was writing Season 9 and had some plans through Season 10. Gizmodo/io9 interview | A dated account of development status, not a release schedule or promise about specific storylines. |
| October 17, 2024 | Warner Bros. Discovery announced a two-season pickup, saying the series would reach Season 12. Official announcement | Confirmation of two additional seasons and the series’ continuation through Season 12. |
| April 1, 2025 | Adult Swim announced that Season 8 would premiere May 25, 2025. Official announcement | A confirmed Season 8 premiere date. The announcement also listed Cardoni, Belden, Chalke, Parnell and Grammer in the cast, with Harmon and Marder as executive producers and Marder as showrunner. |
These later milestones update the 2023 outlook, but the announcements do not establish later seasons’ plots, release dates or current streaming availability.

What the interviews can—and cannot—show
The interviews offer firsthand accounts from the people making and performing the show: why a canon story landed mid-season, how the new leads approached demanding roles, and how Harmon viewed the production calendar. They do not provide a named audience statistic, ratings figure or independent measure of the season’s reception. The cast’s and crew’s positive impressions should therefore be read as their views, not as quantitative evidence of audience response.
