Spoilers for season two of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The surprising loss in Ismael Cruz Córdova’s August 30, 2024, interview is Bronwyn, the healer whose death leaves Arondir grieving and questioning whether he is responsible for what happened to her and her son, Theo.
Why did Bronwyn die in The Rings of Power?
Bronwyn succumbs to her wounds before Isildur reaches the village of Pelargir. Her death is a major loss for the Southlands: she was a healer who helped rally its people. The plot point and Córdova’s response were discussed in James Whitbrook’s August 30, 2024 io9 interview, published as season two launched.
The interview says Nazanin Boniadi would not return for season two, attributing her absence to her decision to step back from acting to advocate for women’s rights in Iran. That is the explanation given by the interview article.
How does Bronwyn’s death affect Arondir and Theo?
Arondir’s grief and guilt
Córdova described Arondir as wondering, “Did he bring this upon her, did he bring this upon Theo?” His grief is bound up with guilt: he questions whether his actions contributed to their suffering while still choosing to love and protect Theo.

Theo’s anger and Arondir’s promise
Theo’s anger makes the bond between him and Arondir difficult. Arondir’s concern for the boy does not erase that hostility, but he continues to protect him. Córdova summed up Arondir’s guiding feeling in the interview: “Love, man, it’s exactly that.”
What does the loss mean for Arondir’s role?
Bronwyn’s death changes Arondir’s personal life, but his defense of the Southlands remains his duty. His commitment to Theo and his responsibility to the people are not presented as competing motives he can simply set aside; the interview frames love as central to how he keeps going.
