Riho has described her connection with Kenny Omega as a long-running professional relationship: they first teamed when she was 12, he continued to follow her career, and he later asked whether she would be interested in wrestling in the United States. Her public comments do not establish a romantic relationship, and she identified Emi Sakura—not Omega—as her mentor.
How Riho and Kenny Omega first connected
In a November 2019 interview with Shueisha’s 週プレNEWS, Riho said she teamed with Omega when she was 12. She added: “12歳の頃ですね。それ以来、ずっと気にかけてくださっていて。” A working translation is: “When I was 12. Since then, he has always kept an eye on me.” The English wording is a translation of the Japanese printed in the interview, not a separately published English quotation. Read the interview at 週プレNEWS.
Riho also recalled hearing that Omega watched her matches and kept up with her progress. She described his continued interest in her career as special. In a June 2019 report of her Sportskeeda interview, she joked, “(Laughs) I don’t know if you can call it a bond.” Read in context, that line is a playful qualification—not evidence that the two had no regard for one another. WrestleZone’s report summarizes those comments.
Did Kenny Omega bring Riho to AEW?
Riho said Omega messaged her to ask if she might be interested in wrestling in the United States. She replied that she was interested, and said she did not initially realize the opportunity would be part of a large new promotion. That account supports saying Omega contacted her about an opportunity; it does not show that he alone arranged her AEW booking or controlled her career.

What their shared match history shows
A 2024 retrospective by Wrestling-NOW.net counts eight matches featuring both wrestlers, including seven as a team. It dates their first team-up to 2009 and their last to 2020. Those are the retrospective’s historical counts, rather than a first-party database tally. The retrospective also recounts Omega’s positive comments about their 2020 mixed tag match. Who was Riho’s mentor?
In the same 2019 Shueisha interview that discusses Omega, Riho named Emi Sakura as her mentor. The interview says Riho began wrestling at age eight. It does not identify Omega as her trainer or mentor, so the two roles should not be conflated.

What can be said about their friendship?
The public record described here supports a respectful wrestling connection: an early team-up, Omega’s continued interest in Riho’s progress, and his message asking about a possible U.S. opportunity. It does not establish a romantic relationship or provide a basis for claims about their private lives beyond what Riho shared.
