What was Richard Simmons’ cause of death?
On August 22, 2024, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner said the cause of death for Milton Teagle “Richard” Simmons was “sequelae of blunt traumatic injuries.” It listed arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease as a contributing condition and classified the manner of death as accident. The county’s official announcement distinguishes the injury-related cause from the contributing heart disease and the manner-of-death classification.
What did his brother Lenny say?
On August 21, 2024, family spokesperson Tom Estey told the Los Angeles Times that Lenny Simmons had been informed by the coroner that Richard’s death was accidental, due to complications from recent falls, with heart disease contributing. Estey said: “The Coroner informed Lenny that Richard’s death was accidental due to complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor.”
That was the family’s reported summary. The county’s subsequent formal wording was more specific: sequelae of blunt traumatic injuries, with arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease contributing. Heart disease was not the sole listed cause. The Times report published Lenny’s account before the agency issued its statement.
