Doctor Who’s 2024 Season One is worth catching up on if you want a Doctor who wears his feelings openly and a companion whose story can take the lead. Across eight episodes, Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson move through comedy, horror, musical fantasy, satire and period romance before a two-part finale brings the season’s Ruby Sunday mystery to the foreground. The variety is a strength, though the sharp shifts mean the season feels more like a set of adventurous genre swings than one tightly unified story.
What is Ncuti Gatwa’s first season of Doctor Who?
Marketed as Season One, the 2024 run has eight episodes and stars Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and Gibson as Ruby Sunday. It was designed as a new entry point, but it also carries an ongoing question about Ruby and her past. The season alternates between adventures that largely stand on their own and episodes that add to that mystery.
The initial release was split by territory: Disney+ launched the season on May 10, 2024 in the United States and internationally outside the UK; BBC iPlayer made it available at midnight on May 11 in the UK, with BBC One airing it later that day. Episodes then arrived weekly. Present-day availability varies by territory and service catalog, so check local listings. Disney’s launch announcement and the official episode announcement set out the original schedule.
What distinguishes Gatwa’s Doctor?
Gatwa’s Doctor is buoyant and quick to connect, but his defining trait is not simply energy: he lets emotion show. Showrunner Russell T Davies described his approach as wanting “a man who cries when it’s sad,” and called Gatwa’s emotions “vast, turbulent, and visible.” That emphasis gives the Doctor a warmth that can make even a brisk adventure feel personal. The official Q&A with Davies is the source for those comments.

Ruby is not just a passenger in this version of the show. Some episodes give her a stronger narrative center than the Doctor, which makes the partnership feel less formulaic and gives the season’s continuing mystery room to grow. The trade-off is that viewers looking for Gatwa in every story’s foreground may find the balance uneven.
How the eight episodes vary in tone and focus
The season’s range is its clearest organizing principle. Davies described the format as allowing “a comedy one week, a terror the next week, a haunted house the next week and a thriller the next week,” while keeping the Doctor and companion at the heart of the show. In practice, the episodes take turns changing the rules of the experience rather than building toward one consistent genre.

Why are the Doctor less prominent in “73 Yards” and “Dot and Bubble”?
Those episodes shift the center of gravity toward Ruby and their guest characters. That choice makes the season’s variety more than a change of scenery: the Doctor-and-companion format can flex, allowing Ruby to carry stories that would feel different if every plot depended on the Doctor solving the problem. It also means these two episodes can register as a departure from the season’s usual pairing. Viewers who enjoy the character-focused detour may find them among the most memorable; viewers seeking a conventional Doctor-led adventure may find them less satisfying.

Does the finale pay off Ruby’s mystery?
“The Legend of Ruby Sunday” and “Empire of Death” form a two-part finale written by Davies, with the season’s continuing questions brought together around Ruby. The ending provides a resolution to the immediate mystery the season has foregrounded, but its effect depends on what a viewer wants from a finale: it delivers a clear concluding movement for this run, while the episodes’ episodic variety means the season does not build every story toward that single payoff. The finale is best approached as the culmination of Ruby’s thread, not as a promise that every standalone adventure will be folded into one plot.
The official announcement identifies the two episodes as the finale and names guest cast members including Jinkx Monsoon, Jonathan Groff, Bonnie Langford and Jemma Redgrave. See the season announcement for the official details.

Is the season worth watching?
Yes, if you are open to tonal swings and want a Doctor whose emotional openness is part of the character rather than a rare dramatic exception. The season’s strongest case is its contrast: lightness can give way to dread, a romantic detour can sit beside a mystery, and Ruby can step forward without the show abandoning its central partnership. The same looseness is also its main limitation. The episodes do not all contribute equally to a single season-long design, so the overall experience can feel uneven even when individual stories are bold.
