- Want experimental detective fiction? Read The New York Trilogy, which gathers City of Glass, Ghosts and The Locked Room.
- Prefer a more contained novel? The Music of Chance or The Book of Illusions are suggested as options by an independent reader resource. Independent reader resource
- Ready for a long, expansive novel? Choose 4 3 2 1, which follows four divergent lives stemming from one birth.
- Interested in his work with French literature? Explore his translations and edited volumes, including The Notebooks of Joseph Joubert.
For experimental detective fiction: The New York Trilogy
The trilogy brings together three novellas: City of Glass, Ghosts and The Locked Room. They first appeared separately in 1985 and 1986. The New York Public Library describes the books as blending postmodern fiction and detective noir: the detective framework becomes a way to ask questions about identity and interpretation, rather than simply a route to solving a crime. Read the three novellas in the collected volume if you want to follow the sequence as a whole. The first is also a natural starting point if you want to try Auster’s experiments before committing to a longer novel.
For autobiography, memory and family: The Invention of Solitude
Published in 1982, The Invention of Solitude is a central work of Auster’s autobiographical prose. Written largely in the wake of his father’s sudden death, it combines personal narrative with reflection on memory, language and solitude. It offers a direct route into concerns that also echo through his fiction.
For later autobiographical writing, consider Hand to Mouth, Winter Journal (2012) and Report from the Interior (2013). These extend the memoir side of his work beyond the father-and-memory focus of his breakthrough prose book. New York Public Library archive Scroll.in memorial reading list
For a sample of his novels across a career
Auster’s novels offer several different ways into his recurring interests in chance, identity and loss. These titles make a useful reading route without suggesting that one represents the whole of his fiction:
- Moon Palace
- The Music of Chance
- Leviathan
- The Book of Illusions
- The Brooklyn Follies
- Sunset Park
Choose among them by the premise or period that appeals to you; the archive and memorial bibliography document them as part of his broader novelistic career. New York Public Library archive Scroll.in memorial reading list
Rank #4
For a long, late novel: 4 3 2 1
In 4 3 2 1, four divergent lives grow from one birth, giving Auster room to explore how different circumstances can redirect a life. It is the choice here for readers who want a substantial, expansive novel rather than a short entry point. The Booker Prize Foundation records its nomination for the 2017 Booker Prize. Translation was not incidental to Auster’s career. His first book, A Little Anthology of Surrealist Poets, appeared in 1972. He later edited and translated The Notebooks of Joseph Joubert, published by New York Review Books Classics in 2005. The publisher’s memorial calls him “a gifted translator of French literature.” New York Review Books memorial

How to choose your next book
- Choose fiction for invented characters and narrative structures; choose memoir for Auster’s direct engagement with his own life and memory.
- Choose The New York Trilogy for detective conventions transformed by postmodern questions; choose a standalone novel such as The Music of Chance or The Book of Illusions if you want a more contained narrative.
- Choose 4 3 2 1 when you want a long, expansive work; start with The Invention of Solitude for a shorter route into his autobiographical prose.
- Choose the Joubert volume or the surrealist anthology to follow his engagement with French literature and translation.
These routes reflect differences in form and subject, not a settled critical ranking. The independent reader resource offering some of these recommendations describes itself as unofficial and unaffiliated with Auster’s estate. Independent reader resource
