Nick Reiner has publicly described drug use beginning in his teens, repeated stays in rehabilitation and periods of homelessness. In interviews and later accounts, he also described damaging items in his parents’ guesthouse while using drugs and recounted taking $200 from his parents as a teenager. Those are personal accounts reported by media outlets, not evidence of a vandalism finding or a theft conviction.
What Nick Reiner has said about his addiction history
Nick Reiner, son of filmmaker Rob Reiner, has spoken about drug use that began during his teens and repeated efforts to get treatment. The Los Angeles Times recounts that he entered rehabilitation more than once and experienced periods of homelessness. In a 2016 interview with his father and Howard Stern, Nick described the situation as having reached a serious point: “I had fucked up so many times in a row that it had gotten to a point where it was serious.” The Howard Stern Show published the interview on May 3, 2016.
Looking back on that period in the interview discussed by the Los Angeles Times, Nick said, “I had no identity, and I had no passions.” His comments present addiction and recovery as an extended personal struggle, rather than a single episode.
What he described about damage at his parents’ guesthouse
Nick’s accounts also included destructive behavior. CNN’s transcript and Variety’s reporting describe his account of damaging items in his parents’ guesthouse while he was using drugs and had been awake for days. This is a reported description of property damage; the sources cited here do not establish a legal finding of vandalism.

What the reported $200 theft story says—and does not say
Variety reported that Nick recounted taking $200 from his parents as a teenager. The amount belongs to that specific reported anecdote: it is not a court record, and the reporting cited here does not establish a theft conviction. Keeping the account separate from the guesthouse damage matters because they are distinct episodes, not one legally adjudicated case.

Nick and Rob Reiner collaborated on Being Charlie, a 2015 film directed by Rob and co-written by Nick. The Associated Press reported that the film drew on elements of their lives and relationship while telling a fictional story about a young man struggling with addiction. In a 2016 interview quoted by the AP, Rob said the process “forced us to understand ourselves better than we had.”
Rob also reflected that he and his wife had not listened when Nick said treatment was not working for him. In the Los Angeles Times’ account of a 2015 interview, he said: “When Nick would tell us that it wasn’t working for him, we wouldn’t listen. We were desperate, and because the people had diplomas on their wall, we listened to them when we should have been listening to our son.” His comments describe the family’s experience and their response to treatment; they are not a general judgment about rehabilitation.
The distinction between the film and the family’s history is important: Being Charlie is a fictionalized work, not a documentary or a complete factual record of Nick Reiner’s life. The interviews and later reporting offer separate personal recollections of addiction, family conflict and destructive behavior, with the legal status of the theft and damage claims not established by the sources cited here.
