Life Is a Carnival: A Musical Celebration of Robbie Robertson was a one-night, star-packed tribute at Los Angeles’s Kia Forum on October 17, 2024. Contemporary coverage and attendee comments point to a compelling musical premise—many artists interpreting Robertson’s work—alongside a five-hour-plus evening whose pace and filming setup frustrated some people in the audience.
A tribute shaped by memory—and by a very large stage
The event was more than a concert built around familiar songs. Its scale and visual framing deliberately called back to The Last Waltz, Martin Scorsese’s 1978 documentary about The Band’s farewell performance. The Los Angeles Times, reporting from the show, described the evening as layered with memories and connected its lighting and lineup to that earlier film. Scorsese was also filming the 2024 concert for an intended future concert-movie release, according to the Times; that report documents the plan at the time, not the film’s eventual release or current availability.
The setting carried its own history. Blackbird Presents, the event’s organizer, identifies the Forum as the final stop on Bob Dylan and The Band’s 1974 tour, whose performances were documented in Before the Flood. The organizer described the tribute as drawing on both Robertson’s work with The Band and his solo career. These connections made the Forum an apt place for a retrospective, though they also meant the show arrived with unusually heavy historical expectations.
Who was billed for the concert?
Blackbird Presents announced a broad roster spanning rock, country, blues, folk and other traditions. The official bill named:

The official event page is an announced bill, however, not proof that every listed artist appeared onstage; the available reporting does not establish a complete attendance record.
What the performance seems to have delivered
The strongest case for the concert is the opportunity to hear an expansive group of artists bring their own voices to Robertson’s catalog. Relix’s recap emphasized a packed house and a program drawing heavily on The Band’s songbook and Robertson’s contributions. Ticketmaster comments sampled for the event likewise praised the musicians, song choices and tribute. Those reactions suggest that the performances themselves were a major draw, but they do not establish a universal verdict or a complete critical consensus.

The Los Angeles Times offered a concise assessment of the evening’s balance between remembrance and momentum: “Yet at its best, the Robertson tribute — produced by Blackbird Presents, which also put on Willie Nelson’s two-night 90th-birthday extravaganza last year at the Hollywood Bowl — had a liveliness that cut through the many-layered retrospection of it all.” The qualification matters: this was a show whose energy could break through its reflective framing, not one the paper described as consistently free of drag.
How long was the show, and what did audiences criticize?
The Times estimated that the concert began around 7 p.m. and ended shortly after midnight. Ticketmaster reviewers offered individual estimates ranging from about four and a half hours to more than five. Taken together, the accounts describe a very long night, but the audience estimates are anecdotes rather than a formal running time.

Some Ticketmaster commenters objected to dead time during stage changes, interruptions associated with filming, and camera equipment that obstructed views. These complaints are especially relevant to a concert being filmed at production scale: the cameras were part of the event’s intended documentary purpose, but their presence and the transitions affected some attendees’ experience. The comments are self-selected, so they show recurring kinds of dissatisfaction without measuring how common those views were among everyone in the arena.
How to read the audience rating
Ticketmaster displayed an aggregate rating of 4.3 out of 5 from 38 reviews when accessed in 2026. It is a changing, self-selected platform score, not a representative poll; both the rating and review count may change. Its favorable overall result sits alongside the platform comments about length, pacing and camera placement, rather than canceling them out.

How it differs from The Last Waltz
The resemblance is meaningful but limited. The Last Waltz documented The Band’s farewell concert; Life Is a Carnival was a memorial celebration of Robertson’s writing and musical legacy, performed by a broad roster of guests. Scorsese’s documented involvement linked the two events in the public imagination, but the available contemporary report establishes only that the 2024 show was filmed with an intended concert-movie release. It does not establish that the film has since been released.
Nor does the comparison tell us how the 2024 concert played song by song. A complete official set list, running order and performer attribution for each song were not verified in the contemporary accounts summarized here, so a more granular reconstruction would risk assigning performances without support.

Verdict
Life Is a Carnival brought together an unusually wide range of artists for a tribute grounded in Robertson’s work and in The Band’s history. Contemporary accounts found musical life in the retrospective, and attendee comments often praised the performances. The trade-off was substantial: a reported evening of roughly five hours, with transitions and film equipment that some audience members found intrusive. It reads as a distinctive commemorative event whose ambition and musical roster were real strengths, even as the practical experience could test a listener’s patience.
