The new single—described by Warner as his first new song in more than a decade—used an AI model to shape another singer’s performance into Travis’s vocal character, then relied on human editing by longtime producer Kyle Lehning and engineer Casey Wood. It was a specific, artist-approved production, not a demonstration that AI can restore any singer’s voice on demand.
What was the AI-assisted single?
“Where That Came From” was released by Randy Travis and Warner Music Nashville on May 3, 2024. Warner called it Travis’s first new song in more than a decade. The label’s co-chair and co-president Cris Lacy framed the effort this way: “AI for good would be giving Randy Travis his voice back.” That is Lacy’s description of this project, not a general guarantee about what voice technology can do.
The process drew attention because Travis’s vocal character was modeled onto a fresh performance after he could no longer sing in the same way. The finished track involved archival recordings, a different singer’s input vocal, purpose-built AI models, and substantial production decisions by people.
How was the song made?
1. The team gathered Travis vocal material
According to the Associated Press, producer Kyle Lehning said the team built two proprietary models: one using 12 vocal stems and another using 42 stems from recordings made between 1985 and 2013. These are figures for this recording project’s source material, not a standard requirement for building a voice model.

2. Another singer performed the new vocal
The model did not generate the entire vocal from nothing. A different singer supplied the performance that formed the input. CBS described a specially designed AI program overlaying Travis’s voice on that new recording, using the archival material to give the result Travis’s vocal character.
3. Producers refined the output
Lehning and engineer Casey Wood then worked on the modeled vocal. The AP account describes human choices in details such as vibrato and phrasing. The result is best understood as AI-assisted: software transformed the input, while the production team shaped how the vocal worked in the song.

What did Travis and his family agree to?
The Associated Press reported that Warner Music Nashville co-president Cris Lacy approached Randy and Mary Travis about the idea and that they were enthusiastic about it. The project was presented by its participants as having Travis’s agreement and artistic oversight. That account describes this particular collaboration; it does not settle broader questions about who may authorize voice modeling in other cases or what legal protections should apply.
In a September 25, 2026 release, Warner Records Nashville connected “Where That Came From” to the couple’s advocacy for creator rights and responsible AI protections. That is the label’s framing of the project’s place in a continuing debate, rather than an independent legal conclusion.

Why the production details matter
The song is a useful example of how to describe AI-assisted music precisely. Its defining features were the artist’s participation as reported at the time, the archive used to build project-specific models, another singer’s performance as the input, and human editing before release. Those details matter more than a broad label such as “AI song,” which can obscure how much of the work came from performers and producers.
Warner Music Nashville’s later announcements continued to present new Randy Travis recordings, including “Set The Blues Back” from the forthcoming album Same Old Way. In its September 2026 item, the label again described “Where That Came From” as an AI-assisted 2024 release. That later context should not be confused with the original single’s release date.
