The decisive act belongs to Kyle, not Mike. The finale then closes on the brothers walking across train tracks and embracing. It is a moment of tenderness after a season marked by violence and pressure, rather than a sign that every consequence has been resolved.
Why does Kyle kill Merle?
The immediate context is Merle’s torment of Kyle while Kyle is in prison. Kyle’s killing of him ends that immediate threat, but it is not presented in the available post-finale comments as a simple, uncomplicated victory. Taylor Handley, who plays Kyle, described the act in a December 31, 2025 CinemaBlend interview as “a turning point, it’s a fork in the road.” He framed Kyle’s future as an open question: whether the character will “fall completely off the edge.”

#1 Best Overall
That is Handley’s interpretation of Kyle’s arc, not confirmation of a specific Season 5 plot. The ending leaves room for the killing to bring relief while also changing Kyle in ways he may have to reckon with.
What does the train-track embrace mean?
The embrace gives the brothers a brief moment of connection after Kyle’s killing of Merle. Handley said the hug was not scripted: Jeremy Renner, who plays Mike, initiated it as the actors walked toward the car. In the same December 28, 2025 CinemaBlend coverage, Handley described it as a release for Kyle after he had been holding so much in.
The moment can be read as spontaneous brotherly care and emotional release. It does not establish that the brothers’ trauma is healed or that Kingstown’s wider conflicts are settled. The available reporting does not establish a definitive creator-authored symbolic meaning for the train tracks or the final image.
Does Merle’s death end his influence?
Richard Brake, who plays Merle, suggested in a December 31, 2025 CinemaBlend interview that the character’s impact could persist after his death. He said Merle’s actions would haunt both Mike and Kyle. That is Brake’s view of the character’s legacy, not a confirmed account of what Season 5 will show.
