Rebecca Ferguson stars in Kathryn Bigelow’s A House of Dynamite, a fictional Netflix thriller about U.S. officials confronting an unattributed nuclear missile aimed at Chicago. The film drew reported Pentagon criticism over its portrayal of the U.S. response, but the available viewing figures describe its October 2025 launch—not current dominance: a U.S. Netflix weekly chart for September 28–October 4, 2026, did not list it among the top ten films.
What is A House of Dynamite about?
Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, the political and military thriller follows officials as they respond to an unattributed nuclear missile detected on course for Chicago. Ferguson plays Captain Olivia Walker, a senior duty officer in the White House Situation Room.

The story asks what the American government would do with less than 20 minutes to decide how to respond to an apparent nuclear attack. The film is fictional; its scenario is not a report of a real missile launch or government decision.
How does the film tell the story?
Rather than follow the crisis in a single uninterrupted sequence, the screenplay revisits roughly 18 minutes from the perspectives of different military and political officials. The repeated window emphasizes how the same unfolding threat is seen across institutions.

Spoiler: the attacker remains unidentified, and the film cuts to black before the president’s decision. The outcome is deliberately left unresolved. TIME’s October 24, 2025 explainer describes the premise, structure and ending.
What backlash did the film prompt?
TheWrap reported that the Pentagon criticized the film’s depiction of the U.S. response to a nuclear missile launch, describing real-world testing as “a vastly different story.” The report does not name the speaker or establish that the comment was a formal position of the U.S. government as a whole. The criticism should therefore be understood as reported Pentagon reaction, not as an identified official’s detailed public rebuttal.

That claim needs a date and a measure. TheWrap reported that the film drew 22.1 million views in its first three days on Netflix after its October 24, 2025 streaming debut, and topped Netflix’s movie list for the week of October 20. Those are launch-week figures, not evidence of its present rank.

In the U.S. Netflix weekly film chart for September 28–October 4, 2026, A House of Dynamite did not appear in the displayed top ten. That dated chart does not support saying the movie currently dominates streaming in the U.S.; it does not establish its rank in other countries, on other services, or under a different viewing measure. Netflix’s weekly U.S. Top 10 chart is a snapshot of a specific week, not a lifetime audience tally.
Netflix’s separate What We Watched reports cover six-month viewing periods. The company says they “better capture the quantity of all hours viewed on Netflix over a six-month period.” Its first-half 2026 report does not highlight this film in the page text reviewed; that omission is not proof that it received zero views.
