A 2024 Dune-inspired demonstration collected moisture from sweat and exhaled breath, but it did not recycle urine or feces. A separate spacesuit research prototype was designed to recover water from urine. Neither account establishes a complete, field-ready stillsuit that can safely supply drinking water.
What the “real-life stillsuit” demonstration actually did
In a build reported in 2024, the Hacksmith team used a waterproof suit and a battery-powered heat exchanger to create a cold surface. Exhaled air passed over the condenser; moisture from breath and sweat was collected and routed to a CamelBak bladder. The reported inputs were moisture, not all bodily fluids: the build did not process urine or feces. Reporting on the demonstration and additional coverage describe it as a working demonstration.
A hydration bladder served as the collection reservoir. That does not make it a filter or purifier, and the reporting does not establish that the collected water was safe for routine drinking. It provides no independent water-quality results or consumer safety certification, nor evidence that the suit is a practical survival device.
A different prototype was designed to recycle urine
A separate spacesuit system, described in a July 12, 2024 EurekAlert! research news release, was designed to collect urine and divert it to a backpack system. Its integrated forward- and reverse-osmosis process recovers water; the system then adds electrolytes and sends the water to an in-suit drink bag. This is distinct from the Hacksmith condensation demonstration in both input and design.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The news release reports these specifications for the urine-processing prototype:
| Reported specification | What the 2024 release says |
|---|---|
| Recycling efficiency | 87% (Frontiers research news release, 2024) |
| Collection and purification | 500 ml in five minutes (Frontiers research news release, 2024) |
| System mass | Approximately 8 kg (Frontiers research news release, 2024) |
These are reported prototype specifications, not confirmed mission performance. The release describes simulated-condition testing and real-spacewalk testing as future steps, rather than reporting an operational system in use.

How the two systems compare
| Question | Hacksmith demonstration | Spacesuit urine prototype |
|---|---|---|
| What does it collect? | Moisture from sweat and exhaled breath; not urine or feces. Demonstration reporting and additional coverage. | Urine, according to the 2024 research news release. |
| How does it recover water? | A cooled surface condenses moisture, which is routed to a reservoir. Demonstration reporting and additional coverage. | Integrated forward- and reverse-osmosis processing, followed by electrolyte enrichment. 2024 research news release. |
| Intended context | Dune-inspired demonstration; the reporting does not establish a practical survival system. Demonstration reporting and additional coverage. | Spacesuit use; the release describes future simulated and real-spacewalk testing. 2024 research news release. |
| Reported throughput and mass | Not stated in the cited reporting. Demonstration reporting and additional coverage. | 87% recycling efficiency; 500 ml in five minutes; approximately 8 kg. These are reported prototype specifications, not verified mission results. 2024 research news release. |

NASA’s urine-treatment technology is related context, not either stillsuit
A 2015 NASA Spinoff summary describes a patented contaminant-treatment pouch, also called a “urine cell” or “contaminant cell,” intended to turn urine or another contaminated liquid into a fortified drink. The summary lists possible uses in space, military, and extreme-environment settings. It is separate from both systems above; the summary does not establish that NASA built either prototype or that the pouch is currently for sale.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a stillsuit provide practical drinking water?
The reports support a narrower conclusion than the science-fiction comparison suggests: one demonstration condensed breath and sweat moisture, while a separate research prototype was built to process urine for spacesuit use. The available reporting does not establish a complete, commercially available consumer stillsuit or independently validate the Hacksmith demonstration’s water for drinking. The urine system’s reported performance remains prototype-level, with further testing described as future work.
