The reboot stars Liam Neeson as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. and continues the comedy franchise that began with the 1988 film. It is no longer an upcoming release: Paramount+ currently lists the 2025 film for streaming.
What Paramount’s trailer announcement refers to
The announcement was for the film’s teaser, not the later full trailer. Paramount Pictures’ teaser page is dated April 3, 2025, and promotes the movie as “Only in theatres August 1st.” Paramount Global Content gives the theatrical premiere date as August 1, 2025. Those are separate dates: April 3 is when the teaser was published; August 1 is the announced premiere.

Paramount also has an official full-trailer page, and Paramount Australia and New Zealand announced a new trailer and poster. The available official listings do not establish the full trailer’s exact publication date, so it should not be confused with the April teaser.
Who is in the new Naked Gun?
Liam Neeson plays Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., a character Paramount describes as following in his father’s footsteps. The studio’s official cast list includes:

Akiva Schaffer directed the film, and Seth MacFarlane produced it. The teaser frames Drebin Jr. as taking up a Police Squad case; that is the studio’s promotional description of the premise.
How the reboot fits the franchise
The new film follows the original The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988) and its two sequels: The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear (1991) and Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult (1994). Paramount identifies David Zucker as director of the 1988 original. The 2025 film carries the series forward through Frank Drebin Jr., rather than being one of the original trilogy’s sequels.
