McCartney says the album draws on memories of growing up in Liverpool, his parents, and early experiences involving George Harrison and John Lennon. He described “Days We Left Behind” as “very much a memory song for me.” The album title comes from a lyric in that track: Dungeon Lane is near Forthlin Road, where he lived in Speke.
How the album came together
McCartney’s official announcement says the project began after he met producer Andrew Watt. McCartney played a guitar chord sequence and recorded what became the opening track, “As You Lie There”; he played most of the instruments on that track. Sessions took place between tour dates over five years, alternating between Los Angeles and Sussex.
