Engadget reporter Devindra Hardawar supplied a photo, voice audio recorded during a call, and a two-sentence prompt; The Simulation’s system generated a character based on him in a South Park-style story.
What happened in the demonstration?
In his July 18, 2023 account, Hardawar said the generated character visited Sharon and Randy Marsh’s home, warned them about an AI uprising, and then went to the school. The scene was presented as a demonstration of The Simulation’s Showrunner project, also called SHOW-1—not as footage from the television series.

Hardawar reported that the inputs were a photograph, voice audio he recorded during a call with The Simulation chief executive Edward Saatchi, and a two-sentence prompt. Those are the inputs described for this particular demonstration; the report does not establish that every user could make an episode with the same process.
How did the AI South Park episode work?
The Simulation’s SHOW-1 research page describes a system combining large language models, custom diffusion models, and multi-agent simulation. The company says these components were used for story contextualization and progression, as well as behavioral control. Its research page dates the work to July 18, 2023.

That description explains the project’s approach at a high level. It does not mean the system generated the result without oversight: Hardawar reported that the team previewed episodes to check whether they made sense.
What did the result look and sound like?
Hardawar described the result as surprisingly watchable, but also noted that some names were pronounced poorly and that the voice sometimes sounded robotic. These were observations of the demonstration, not measured performance results or a guarantee of what other outputs would sound like.

The account does not establish that the episode was broadcast-quality, or that the demonstration was a fully autonomous production pipeline. The reported previewing by the team is an important part of the context.
Was it an official or authorized South Park episode?
No. The demonstration used South Park as research material and was not an official episode or an authorized guest role. The Simulation said it would not release a way for people to create South Park episodes because the series was not its intellectual property.

In 2023 reporting by The Guardian, Saatchi said the work was for research, was not publicly available, and that the project had not approached Trey Parker, Matt Stone, or Comedy Central. Those statements describe the situation reported in 2023; they do not establish present-day access or licensing status.

The demonstration shows that The Simulation created a South Park-style example featuring a journalist from a photo, voice audio, and a short prompt. It does not establish that the system or a successor is currently available to the public, or that users have permission to generate episodes using the series. Current availability and licensing status are not established by the cited 2023 accounts.
